Default 12V cold start stall?

I was wondering if anyone has had an old 12V run great but run rough during warmup? I just checked the old thing and got about 22MPG on the highway without a load. But then this weekend we went camping and pulled the dirtbikes to the mountains and the thing ran great; but two times when I started the thing cold it blew white smoke and ran so rough it died after about a minute. What gives? I drove it 200 miles home and it ran great but when cold it's a mystery. Any ideas?
