Rear end gears?

Default Rear end gears?

My truck says I have 4.10 gears in it. I was just wondering what would happen if someone changed the gears in the rear but not in the front. You can see they did something to the rear end because there is left over silicone, but I dont know what they did. When im in 4WD I can break the rear end loose and drift my truck in the snow and it seems to me that the rear end breaks loose before the front end will when in 4wd in snow. Any ideas?

if gears were diff you could not drive it in the snow.

Well like i said b4 most likely they didn't change them to a dif ration because it would blow up pretty fast, but to know for sure jack up your truck put a pice of tape on the tire, rotate the drive shaft by hand and count the turns of the drive shaft and compare it to the rotation of the wheel. it shold b the same in the front as the back. this is also the way to figure out your gear ration without pulling the diff cover and counting the teeth. I am almost 100% sure your ratio will match otherwise it would have blown by now

Correct, it would either push or drag so bad you couldn't drive it. The trucks not a true 50/50 split in 4wheel drive.

OK cool thats good to know. I think they put a locker in the rear end because both tires go when i burnout on pavement, but i do not do burnouts with the toyo mt's they cost to damn much.

this could be, most of these trucks came with a sure grip rear end thoe. how many miles does your truck have? they could have just replced a carrier bearing or a pinion bearing.

wow thats nice my trucks got 135000 and i thought that was low. I wonder why they were in your rear? kinda strange that thing should just be breaking in at that millage

I have no idea. I know it doesnt burn oil or not enough to be noticable if it does burn at all. I didnt do a compression test on or a leakdown test. Is a compression test easy to do? The truck also had a blown hub before I bought it but the dealer fixed it. My major complaint is the transmission, whoever put a shift kit in it didnt put a transgo one it it, it shifts way to hard down low and not hard enough up top. The rear end is locked up pretty tight when im on gravel with my windows down you can hear it biting.

I have never done one on a diesel, i would guess it is not to much harder than a gass job, i will look it up in my service manual tomorrow. but if you have never done it b4 and don't have the tools or manual i would have a good diesl shop check it out. you have to pull all the injectors....
