cummins used a dowl pin to hold the timing case in place till they put the bolts in, eventually the pin works its way uot into the timing case, if it comes out it could do 3 things
1.) nothing fall into the oil pan and no worries
2.) come in contact with cam gear and the pin will be forced threw the timing case now needing to replace the case averag cost $1200
3.) come in contact with cam causing gear to break off cam casuing everything to F up with valves in the cylanders cost $new cummins

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

to fix it it is a $90 part and about 2-3 hours of fun drinking beers with your buddies and pulling the timing case cover

Do some searching for "KDP Tab Kit"

Another good site with technical info is DodgeRam.org, and cumminsdatabase.com
I think there's a write up on a few sites about doing it yourself, what parts & tools you need.

It's a pain in the *** if it's your first stab at it. I was going to replace a leaky front cover gasket, front seal, and tab the KDP. I got as far as the fan removal, and stopped and put everything back together. I was so pissed off and covered in black oil that I just said to hell with it. It can keep leaking as far as I'm concerned.

I do need to find someone who's done it a time or two before and would be willing to help out. I can supply my warehouse, air, beer, pizza, BBQ. But it seems everyone around here has a 24-valve. pussies.

Just to throw this out there if you do not have it. DO IT. I was told my truck had this done. well it didn't my truck is sitting 2 hours away ,from my house,at Jim Jessup's place. he is fixing it and he told me it could be up to 2k to fix mine. pin came out contacted the cam gear and found its way out threw the gear housing. He say it is not if the pin comes out it is when it comes out. in other words the pin will come out on all of them.
