Default What To Buy ?

The guys over in the first gen section were alot of help so i figured id post this here to. I am trying to decide what model to buy for a dd around town and a future pullin truck since im gonna attend a diesel college and want somethin to tinker around on. they told me that a 2nd gen would be the best bet. i was wondering what year model would be the best to buy. i dont wanna spend too much money atleast right now . i would greatly appreciate any input. also , are there any suggestions on aftermarket products ?

Any year really - but the best ones are the 96-98 12V's with the p7100 Injector pump.

Are you looking at a stick or an auto?

Heres a pretty good thread on a pulling truck build - you would be looking at adding similar mods:

Yep, '96-mid year '98 manual trans 12 valve would be your best bet. Those have the bigger 210hp injection pump. Auto's have the 180hp pump. That will be the P7100 injection pump which will flow lots of fuel. It's been THE pump for many pulling/racing trucks. Many of the 24 valve guys put the P7100 on their trucks. Also, no electronics, much of the hp gains can be done by hand, if you don't mind getting dirty. Check this out;CumminsDatabase.com :: Turning Up A P7100 Pump
