Turbo question.

Turbo question.
Hey guys, new to the forum. I have a question, I have a stock hx35 with the silencer ring off, and adjustable boost elbow that is set to around 38-40 psi. I bought the truck used, it has no fuel plate, star wheel cranked tight, pre-boost screw turned in, firepunk built auto, stock injectors for all I know. I got no information besides the transmission when I bought it, lovely dealers don't tell you anything. When driving it, the turbo spools up very very quickly, it will smoke through the whole rpm range and the egts will climb up to about 1400 then I let off cause I'm afraid of burning it up. So my question is, is there a more usable turbo than the stock one with as much fuel as I'm putting out? The truck is fast in 1st through 3rd then levels off and doesn't get much faster with boost gauge right at 40, and still a darker haze of smoke. Any help is very appreciated. Very happy to be on the forum. Thank you for the help.

Does it make more then 2800rpm? That's one curiosity, because you will defiantly want a governor spring regardless to get any more performance out of it. And as for turbos what are your goals. Are you building up to something, have a budget. Plan to stay small, plan to add a second turbo later etc. Usually a simple 62/65 s300 is a good choice or an he351/ custom he351 with a larger wheel.

Hello wpg6.5, thank you for the reply. At the moment I am waiting on a 4k gsk and valve springs, and as for turbo, I want a good street turbo, I don't plan to run two, I like single setups. I'll occasionally pull a goose neck slant 4 horse trailer with a small living quarters in the summer time and a car trailer for my friends, but other than that not too much hard work. Maybe pull a sled at our county fair once or twice a year. Was thinking about a hx40 from JM turbo, has a 1 year warranty or you can buy a extended warranty. They are 61/64/18cm, but I am hesitant after seeing so many people with problems.

Are you sure you have lockup? You should definitely keep pulling hard after 3rd gear, unless the converter isn't locking or it isn't shifting into OD. You aren't going to burn anything up at 1400° unless you maintain it for miles on end. As long as you're cruising under a grand (hopefully well under, unless you're towing) you're fine.
No matter what turbo you put on there, running the pump wide open like that you're still going to have to keep an eye on the pyro if you get in it and stay in it. As to towing, the GSK will allow you to turn off the OD and still run reasonably highway speeds in third, which keeps the turbo spooled to help keep it cool and doesn't bog it with fuel on hills (depending on your rear gearing- this works with 3.54s, but if you have 4.10's you're already there). Putting a plate in to profile out the wasted fuel will help with the heat also. Unless you have money to blow and really just want a bigger turbo, I'd try to make what you have more efficient before changing chargers.

Thanks JBearSVT. Positive I have lock up, I put it on a switch in the cab below my steering column. And it works. And the converter is locking up and overdrive works. Everything works as it should. It just feels like when you get to 65 or so it levels off and doesn't get much faster. But this could also be due to my 4.10 gearing too. And I don't mind not having a plate in there, I'd like to have a bigger turbo anyhow.

What rpm are you maxing out at? That's your max fueling. One of the reasons you may be flattening off. And as for a turbo a simple bd super b or killer b would suite you fine. Then are a 58/65 and a 62/65. The kit comes with everything to bolt them on including a down pipe. They are the best all around price aswell. If your keeping it stock other then that and Wanna shoot for up to 400ish hp those are good turbos. Aswell can be compounded later.
