Well i ran her in 4wd today and decided since it had been a month or two since i was in low to use it. Well i stick it in low and it makes a loud thud. So i start driving thinking what the heck was that when all of a sudden it pops out of low with a loud bang. so i try putting it back into low and i try driving and the same thing happens. I then try to go back to high and it grinds as i pull it out of neutral into 2wd. In high i have no issue but it wont stay in low and makes a loud thud about as loud as dropping the tail gate but a more of a metallic sound. Any ideas?

 

Shifting forks are wore out, going to need a rebuilt transfer case. Dad had one that jumped out of 2 hi and had only 4 wheel. Went for a few months then completely wore out.

 

Whats it cost to rebuild a t case?

 

One for his 82 Chevy was $700, ready to go! Probably looking around $700-$1000, thats to have someone do it by the way.

Guy could rebuild one himself, if he has the tools, but there are so many small parts to keep track of. Seen my dad tear his apart. The look on his eyes realizing that he stumbled onto a very hard project was priceless. He opted to go for a unit ready to go. Good thing they didn't want the old one back.

 

I know a guy that use to own the local 4x4 shop. Im gonna alk to him and see what he says. Is there anyway to make the stock T case stronger?

 

You can step up the the DHD T-case if you don't already have one, its got a bigger chain and a PTO option on it. Other than that the only thing you can really do to them is put in a lower low range set of gears, or a bigger input shaft (a 29 tooth out of a NV equipped truck) but you'd need an adapter to go from the auto to the stick style t-case.

If your really looking to go all out and build it big, get a NP205 and have it machined for the bigger input shaft to match your trans, they'll never break, but IMO they're an old school case, that doesn't like life on the street.

Well, do you have a press and a lot of extra time without the need for your truck? Because I can tell you right now that you'll need both. Even if you have a press, once you pull the case apart you'll have to see what parts you need, then order them, localy around buffalo nobody has anything for them, its probably similar there.
