Yeah, oil temp,trans,pyro,Drive pressure , more importatnt than "Boost" as boost is jujst a measure of restriction in flow .... air flow ....

 

All the talk lately of drive pressure has me curious. I have no fear that I am in danger at this point but I may have to look at installing one just to see. Seems like one of those add it to the list things. How many guys are actually running them out there and has it been a point of concern when you were able to monitor it?

 

I've never seen one. That said, it's a valid concern. These things make mad drive pressure, and everything you do to turn them up turns it up as well. Before you know it you have a fire-breathing twin fed dyno queen that would be loads of fun if it didn't projectile vomit oil through the filler neck all over the engine bay and running down the fenders every time you take it for a joy ride.

Any reason you couldn't just use another boost gauge for it?

 

No, but it would need to read higher (maybe much higher) than the boost gauge.
Just know that if you use a mechanical gauge you're going to have to filter it somehow because it'll fill with soot, and if you use an electric one the sensor will have to be able to take some serious heat. Most can, but regardless:

most people say a 1:1 ratio of boost pressure vs. drive pressure is ideal, and they aren't wrong, but most turbos aren't that efficient. Drive pressure is generally always higher than boost pressure, so if you generally run say, 40psi of boost and only have a 40psi gauge for drive pressure, it isn't going to tell you when you have a problem. Depending on how efficient your setup is, a turbo that pushes 35psi could be creating 65psi of drive pressure. That wouldn't be catastrophic, but it wouldn't be good and you'd want to know.
Obviously, the more boost your setup is capable of running, the higher you'll need your drive pressure gauge to read to monitor the situation. A ratio of up to 1:1.5 is probably the high side of normal, so if you run 30psi of boost, you'd need at least a 45psi gauge to know you're drive pressure is ok. IMO, if you're going to do it, you may as well double it. Can you boost 50psi? Then use a 100psi gauge for drive pressure.

 

Ya it would be best to get. 60-100 psi drive pressure gauge. Depending how far you plan to push your hx35. Or upgrade turbos. Some turbos like my he351 love to be over driven. But with that you need studs and the turbos life is substantially decreased I'm sure. At 42 psi I believe most he351's are at 60 drive pressure. Hx35's are probably similar.

 

yeah the 215 in my auto truck .. w/o fuel plate was making 26 psi Intake boost pressure and 48-50 pis drive pressure ... I reinstalled the FP .. need bigger turbo or Housing ... then I can play ..

Of course that was just to be safe .. now that I have a seeping HG ... hope ti fix that all soon enough .. finding time while having a shreded shoulder is kinda ruff .. and awating Surgery soon ..

 

Good to know, I am not really planning much over 40PSI with the new turbo, but to play safe, I will find a 100 PSI gauge hopefully in the same gauge type I am running. 4x4 just ignore that shoulder, pain is just your bodies way of telling you that you are still alive .
