a carter lift pump on a vp truck is going to be around 12psi if its in good shape. a powerstroke fuel pump will be from 50-60psi (which you can safely run on your truck unregulated) i wouldnt do it for a long time but its not going to break anything. 20psi under full load is about as low of fuel pressure as you really want to go an a p7100 or you will start seeing losses in power. i would replace the new lift pump with another one or put a raptor on it. perferably the raptor.

have you ever replaced the starter? there is a metal fuel line that is in striking distance from an open ended wrench and battery voltage by the back of the pump. i have seen a few times carless people have arced to this line and made a few pin holes that allow the fuel system to not hold prime. give that line a good look.

Tonight I gave it another go. This time hooking up the lift pump and running through the factory filter and everything. But I still ran it out of a bucket. I went and bought some uv fuel dye in hope it would help me find the leak. Well I found a couple drops right next to the left front shock bracket on the frame. But I could not find where it came from. I also found the #2 injector had a little fuel in the retaining nut. I think this is coming from the return off the injector. Could this be my problem? It seems to loose prime within a few minutes but does start just runs a little rough and then smooths out.

Return line behind the Ip wil crack I had a small leak on mine as well .. and then there's the Fuel heater and that's the most porminite leak poin on the 12V all together .. delete the heater and then go for the return line ... with both of those fixed the small amount of fuel found @ injector can be delt with , just be careful not to over torque the nut, a little at a time and dry it off with brake clean ... test and retorque as neccessary

I just want to thank you guys for all the ideas. I was able to fix the leak at the injector but that didn't change a thing. In order to see if the return line from the injection pump was leaking I used some vise grips to pinch the rubber line and put pressure on the line. Let it run awhile and checked with the uv light for the dye and it was dry. I also took the line off that goes from the injection pump to the fuel filter. I inspected it and did not see any pinholes. I have already deleted the fuel heater and I don't see any fuel coming from the prefilter housing.

Turbo 2332 to answer your question yes it starts, runs rough and then clears up within a few seconds. If you step on the pedal real quick and let off it makes some nice black smoke. After holding it at 2000 rpm for about 20 seconds it starts missing and blowing a little white smoke. But if you let it back to idle within a few seconds it clears up again. Like you said I am starting to think I got a bad lift pump.

yeah sounds like low fuel pressure and or volume , either one will cause the issue ..

Well I made progress today. I hooked up my electic lift pump on the pickup tube I am using to suck the fuel out of a bucket. This gave the engine lift pump a little posituve pressure which seemed to help! I was able to keep it at 2000 rpm as long as I wanted! Then it would return back to idle without even a hiccup. If I go to 2500 rpm it starts to miss but before it couldn't even make it that high. I think I am going to go with a raptor fuel pump setup but I don't know if I should go with the 100 or 150 gph. The 150 is only $20.00 more so why not?
I really hope this is my problem and not an injection pump.

I let the truck sit today without being started. Then this evening I ran the electric lift pump for a few seconds and started it. It started right away without any hesitation and was running great. Without that little electric pump it was a little harder to start and would take 20 seconds to smooth out.
Now I am thinking of buying a raptor fuel pump and would like to get some input from you guys. Should I get the 100 or 150gph fuel pump? I am thinking the 150gph pump because it is only 20 bucks more than the 100. I also have marine injectors in the engine so I would think I would need a little higher volume.
Lastly, what kind of pressure do these pumps put out? I can't find any pressure ratings for either pump.
