Default Mods for MPG

Hello I just bought a 1996 dodge 2500 4x4 cummins diesel its an automatic. I have it straight piped it and everything else is stock. The air filter is stock but has a new K and N airfilter. The truck is stock and no engine mods yet. Does anyone have any ideas to get better mpg for my truck in the engine. Im new to the diesel world. The transmission was just rebuild and now has a sports shifter built in. Thank you.

Injector pump timing. It's set to 12.5° IIRC, although as the miles rack up on these engines it's known to slip. Regardless, bumping it to 16-17° or so should improve mileage noticeably, but it isn't the simplest thing to do. There's a lot of info on it here, including walkthroughs of the process, but hunting down a local Cummins guru may be a wiser choice.
