trying to make my 12 valve smoke a bit

ive got a 98 5 speed 12 valve. trying to give it somemore power as cheap as i can for right now. aswell as make it smoke a decent amount. what ive done so far is put a '0' fuel plate in it, cranked the starwheel a few clicks towards the motor, and slid the afc housing all the way forward. from what ive read it should smoke pretty good. but it hardly smokes at all just a bit at idle when you step on it. as far as performance its increased a fairly large amount ive also got a k&n cold air and AFE intake horn. with 4 inch turbo back exhaust. any subjestions? thanks! cheers:c:

sweetv8s10 01-15-2013 06:20 PM

Just to warn you other people on here don't like smoke I'm not one of those people but you are going to get a lot of mean comments from other people.Just thought I would let you know ahead of time good luck.

spool'r up 01-15-2013 07:06 PM

Haha ya ive noticed! But its not there truck so it doesnt matter what people think. Must be somebody here that can help me out

olsmokey 01-15-2013 07:16 PM

people can say what they want as far as im concerned i want to be able to smoke out any intersection i want but still have it controllable when im pulling trailers or just driving. its weird it wont smoke thow, i have a tuned pump a #10 plate and a 3000 gsk and if i floor it i can roll some decent smoke.

spool'r up 01-15-2013 07:31 PM

Ya man ive got buddys with 12 valves and all they did was grind the plate and the things roll like no tomorrow! I just want mine to smoke when i want it to i guess il just have to upgrade the injectors in the spring! Or maybe just crank up the smokke screw in the back of the afc housing but i dont want to do that untill i get an egt guage rigged up

Cumminsaddict 01-15-2013 08:26 PM

try putting the star wheel full forward thatll open the smoke up. sounds like youve got it running pretty efficient for now though, too much fuel and youll be delaying spool up

spool'r up 01-15-2013 08:34 PM

I was watching a video about the starwheel but it was just on youtube so the guy might have no clue what hes talking about but he was saying dont go over 5 clicks on a stock cummins, but ive also read people saying its ok to crank it fully forward. Cranking the starwheel will that gave it smoke preboost or during? Thanks for the info fellas! Appreciate it

BramanteCummins 01-15-2013 09:33 PM

RESEARCH. SEARCH FUNCTION. Backing off the star wheel softens the spring which makes it more sensitive to boost pressure and move the foot sooner. If you want smoke there's a screw in the back of the AFC. This will allow more fuel before the turbo spools up. As far as what a stock truck will handle... IF YOU CAN'T PAY DON'T PLAY. Keep it stop and drive it. Upgrade the valve body first. Then the converter. Then add some power to it.

Forget black smoke:td: Tire smoke is much more fun :tu:

tiremann9669 01-16-2013 10:36 AM

Yep smoke out everybody, pretty soon the EPA will just ban diesel pickups all together Dumbasses:td:

olsmokey 01-16-2013 10:42 AM

i dont think anyone here is talking about making a truck smoke all the time and just being ignorant. when i crowd my throttle my truck blows black, just the way it is. loaded my pete blows black for all 13 gears its just the way it is.

My Pete doesn't. In fact, it basically doesn't smoke at all. On the one hand, I do enjoy a good smoke show. On the other hand, I don't like paying for wasted fuel, nor do I want to be obnoxious in traffic.

Seems to me the best solution would be if you had some sort of smoke switch you could turn on and off at will. But nothing like that seems to exist either for my Pete (Caterpillar 3406E) or my Dodge (12 valve 5.9L Cummins).:humm:

olsmokey 01-16-2013 09:16 PM

mines a 550 cat and i dont know if it was turned up by a previous owner or not. but it does smoke in every gear with a trailer behind. there are times i wished it wouldnt, but oh well i guess. my pickup on the other hand is very controllable.

What year, and what do you pull with it? I'm a bit of a Pete nut, although I'm not actually running mine -- it would interfere with my day job. :s:

i love reading threads of people who want smoke it makes me lauph now days go for power not smoke

mikmaze 01-20-2013 12:13 PM

delete the turbo, that will make it smoke, just be sure to dump the exhaust into the cab right next to your ignorant ass...... smoke is what brought us all the epa crap we have now, keep going and make it worse for everyone. No different that the AR hype, one asshole with an AR and the whole country has to suffer.

if you do a search, you will find alot of "MORE SMOKE"

I think what the problem is, the ones who ask the question, dont want to pay for it.

if your truck does not have smoke, that means your truck is set up nice, your turbo is matched with your injectors, injection pump and everything else that makes these engine alive.

I'm sorry to say, if you want smoke, spend the money on larger injectors, have your pumped tunned, get a larger turbo, if you set your truck up correctlly, you will have power plus smoke.

I think the reasone why so many get upset about this question, because it has been answered so many times.
you better get gauges for your truck or you could be posting in the diesel distress next time.

good luck.

Try and find an edge ez programer. One of my buddys has one and it works great for smoke when you give it some extra throttle but dose not smoke when you just drive it. and the edge e z is not hard on your engine it is relatively cheap also 200-400 or so. if you could find a used one that would work. most of them don't have a VIN lock also.
or you could splice one of the wires going to the turbo run it into the cab and to a (smoke switch) you risk damaging your turbo though. it might be worth it though. it dose not effect much of anything like fuel milage, ect just makes er roll coal. any questions 1918-207-5275:tu::tu::tu::tu::c::c::c::c::c:

injectors 40hp

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

i hear mechanics tell me that a big intake with a big exasute will clear the smoke so you cant see the smoke it thins it out that what they told me my 96 with a cranked afc number 8 plate stage2 afe intake and boost elbow and 5 in mbrp does it dont smoke for crap

take a trash bag and wrap it around your air filter. You could also remove your pesky turbo dodge just put that on for EPA regs. You could also find the biggest injectors possible and slap those babies in. Also make sure your starwheel is cranked towards your engine. your gona want to remove your fuel plate as well and throw it in the trash. Also if you have a egt gauge throw that in the trash. dont mind the burning smell it just the awsome black clouds of death your spewing from your evil pick up.:rocking::rocking::rocking:

I dont understand why people hear diesel and they automatically think you can put a programmer on them?

JBearSVT 01-24-2013 08:18 PM

I love it when people ask me if I have a programmer or "chip" on my 12V yet.

No, wait, I actually don't love it.

:nope:

:nope:

dont get me wrong i hate it to, but you have a 1998 which most people relate to the 24v of that year even though yours is a 12v
you should just get a little 12v sticker to avoid dumb questions :c:

sweetv8s10 01-24-2013 08:37 PM

Thats why he is in the 12 valve section!

CR9712v 01-24-2013 08:38 PM

someone who walks up to him on the the street isent going to know hes in the 12 valve section on diesel bombers... try again :w2:

sweetv8s10 01-24-2013 09:18 PM

The 24 valve says it on the door.
