The timing pin is located at the back of the gear housing and below the injection pump. Fitting the timing pin into the hole in the crankshaft is tricky, spin the harmonic balancer and watch the valve the train until the #1 exhaust valve closes, then turn the crankshaft about 90 degrees. If the timing pin will not engage, spray it with some penetrating oil to loosen it.
When the pin engages the hole in the camshaft gear, cylinder No. 1 is at TDC on the compression stroke. Be sure to disengage the timing pin after locating top dead center.
