replace that filter with something bigger & better...

check all your brakes & wheel bearings, are your wheel hubs hot when you stop after a trip to the store?

the wix part number 42790. any auto parts store should be able to match it up. but you will need to take out your factory air box and create a heat shield between the turbo and the filter or you will melt it. i have not installed mine yet and cant wait til i get to to see if that helps my mileage. i wish i got 15. i get 12 on a good day. its pretty much the same truck but mine is a 96.i have already done my valve lash to 8 and 18 thousandths. however i have not had my timing advanced. im kind of scared to without head studs and 276 thousand miles. some people say it will be fine yet others say be careful.

My friend has a 96 cummins and he is retarding the timing. im not sure how much but with a #6 fuel plate and timing the mechanic is expected to get 100 more horse out of it. What would be better? advancing or retarding?

Yeah if those hubs are hot after a short drive of regular cruising they are too tight and need to be adjusted

Check your right front brake line, could be worn out and not holding form under braking pressure.

Why is he retarding the timing?

I really wish someone else would comment on this because I've never known retarded timing to be a good thing on a diesel...
