Default governer springs and shift kits

Are 3k governed springs harder on the transmission than the stock ones? Is the shift kit worth putting in until I get the money for a converter and valve body? My truck has the pump turned up and the fuel plate out. I'm not sure if the tranny is starting to slip or the converter. How can I tell?
