Default good turbo upgrade?

i need some opinions, i want to upgrade my turbo and i have heard that a 03 dodge turbo will help spool up and power but i dont know. my turbo kinda has some in and out slop and ate alot of the turbine wheel of the housing so i am in a rut but dont want to spend alot of money on a turbo that wont give me more performance. i appreciate all the feedback

sorry should of gave more info. i have the fuel plate ground to a zero and afc 2-1/2 turn from all the way forward. i want to have less lag. the turbo i have is a wh1c. it just seems like it takes forever to spool . say i am in fourth going 35 and when i stomp it it probable takes five seconds to really start pulling but when it does it really goes. i have loosened the afc more and less but just smokes more. any suggestions are helpful

My 2wheel has a he551vg off a 15 ltr. Fueled it to 80 lbs boost pressure. Auto smokes tires every shift when u stomp it, even 3rd lockup to 4th lockup at 80 mph. Tricky to keep her lined up even at the drag strip.

wow that is a lot of boost! is that turbo also like the he351ve? i have been resaerching it and seems like it would be a good swap cause of the adjusbable vanes. just trying to figure out how to make a mechanical adjustment for it.

Default he551

Fleece performance sells a variable controller,do not know the price. I built my own with a 4 way double acting spoolvalve a hobbs switch a pneumatic ram and air pump. Basically vane is closed tight all the time, (you can hear it whistling from two blocks away) until boost reaches 60 then the controller opens the vane all the way. Works dam good. The guys at my local cummins laughed when i bought the turbo, until i smoked the tires through all 4 gears in front of their shop. The best i can do is a 12.2 in the quarter, any more than half throttle and you are headed for the wall. Concentrating on a dragster, pickups belong on the street.

The turbo on the 03- early 04 isn't the best upgrade. Yes it would spool faster but exhaust housing is pretty small, and compressor wheel is the same size. Going with a 04.5-07 still has a small exhaust housing but has a bigger compressor wheel than what you had. The he351ve off a 07.5 newer is a vgt turbo. If u get it to work correctly, it gives fast spool up, and low gets on the top end because of the big exhaust housing

I was getting pretty excited about your post, right up to the "If u get it to work correctly" part. Is this difficult to pull off? I know you can come by a low mile he351ve pretty cheap.

How did you mount your he551? Did you flip the manifold?
