Need help with exhaust

Well im new with diesels, got my first about a year and a half ago. And now lookin into gettin duals but not sure if i want to go cat or turbo back. whats the benefits of goin turbo back over cat back??

And what are the best exhaust makes out there, i was just lookin into MBRP so far but id love to hear from you guys that have experience in cruel duals... just made that up off the top of my head... CRUEL DUALS!!! :yeah:

Rttoys 01-07-2009 08:01 PM

Considering there is only one pipe coming off the turbo, duals is for looks. :ouch:

The biggest question is- How loud do you want it? :humm:

I pull my heavy a$$ trailer too much to want to hear any droan in the cab, so I still run the stock muffler and just deleted the cat. :U: No added noise in the cab.....keeps wifey happy.

MBRP and Magnaflow mufflers alone sound good. If you want more noise, then delete the kitty.

You can either: buy the muffler and cut and splice. Buy a 'cat back', dirrect bolt in. or buy what's called the 'turbo back', it's a full replacement that deletes the cat and adds the muffler and tailpipe.

Decisions, decisions.....:humm:

Kens_PS 01-07-2009 09:38 PM

As mentioned already it depends on the Sound you want. The two most popular ones we deal with are MBRP and Magnaflow. MBRP will be louder in and out of the cab, the Magnaflow will be quieter in the cab, but have a deeper tone outside. This all due to muffler can size, MBRP is 5" diameter x 24" long, Magnaflow 7" diameter x 30"

You'll get approx. 75-80% of the benefit of a turbo-back with a cat-back
The Magnaflows can be seen here.

Ive got a 4" downpipe back MBRP system .. It deleted my cat, and replaced the muffler like these guys said with the MBRP muffler. The exhaust went together flawlessly.. it was harder to take out the old crap than to put in the new system. My wife and I did the whole job in about an hour. With no cat, and the MBRP muffler, its nice..

I couldnt tell much difference in the cab, over what I had, which was just a stock cat. Now I have the MBRP Muffler out, and its straight piped. I pull my 5th wheel camper ALOT.. like.. weekly, for 3 or 400 miles each trip. And the in cab drone is minimal. I still talk on my cell just fine. But outside the cab.. WOW.. its really loud behind me.. :w2:

I think duals on our trucks is silly, but its all in your preference. I have heard alot of good things about MBRP and diamondeye and magnaflow..

Just find a good deal from one of our vendors, get the setup you want, and Im sure you will be happy. :U:

2500HeavyDuty 01-07-2009 11:33 PM

u should hear the drone on my truck kc, it sounds like a freakin helicopter when i high idle it.

heres like a 5 to 7hp gain when deleting the cat when going with a full 4 inch exhaust and maybe a few degrees drop in egts. if ur lookin into an exhaust a 4 inch would do ya best

HeavyChevyDMAX 01-08-2009 05:30 PM

alright great thanks guys, i got the money i just want to talk to the dealership first to make sure it wont disturb my warranty

How does the truck sound straight piped compared to with the MBRP muffler? Is it a nice low growl or just a loud diesel? I got no cat on my truck and I'm thinking about replacing just the muffler or straight piping it...

Yeah, I think down pipe is the same as turbo back.

Yeah, I think down pipe is the same as turbo back.

Yes Downpipe back is considered "turbo back" but Diamoneye actually sells a TRUE TURBO BACK with downpipe..

As for the sound, its a nice deep grumble..

dozerboy 01-08-2009 07:29 PM

If you want get an idea on sound go to youtube and search duramax diesel exhaust. There are tons of sound clips on there.

i just put on an MBRP exhaust from the turbo back with cat delete. Like KC said it is simple to put on as long as you have a sawzall. I put alot of miles on my truck about 250 on the average a day. I like a quiet cab. It is just a tad louder than stock. It also sounds heathy. :U:

K50 01-09-2009 10:03 AM

Thanks for the info guys!!! :c::rocking:

I didnt use a sawzall though.. lol I just dropped the spare tire, unbolted the stock exhaust, and used the persuasion of a BFH to remove it all.. the new system went right in very easy.

I won the Diamond Eye Turbo back on here some time ago. Due to a guy running a red light and then Hurricane Ike it didn't get put on as soon as I wanted. I finally got it put on and it sounds really good. Its really not too loud or annoying at all just driving around, but it wakes up when you romp on it and sounds great. I need to get someone to help me get some video of me driving it so I can do a write up and post it up. Rttoys heard it when we were towing our towys to go 4 wheeling a month or 2 ago. You won't be disappointed. I honestly have not compared prices of Diamond Eye vs the others, but I am sure they are reasonable. In fact, I bet Lukesdiesel can give you a price if you PM him.

Dave lets go on westheimer :choochoo:

ill bring a camera

Oh yeah, and the cops....good thinking.

Rttoys can tell you that I prefer to race on Voss for all of the Memorial / Hedwig Villages cops that like to write tickets for thinking about speeding. :argh:

2500HeavyDuty 01-09-2009 10:17 PM

im really thinkin of doing a 140mph fly by on westpark, i need a camera guy though so i can drive past them

HeavyChevyDMAX 01-11-2009 09:47 AM

It will increase sound and change tone slightly. We are running a special for the month of January on Mbrp performance series exhaust. Great bang for the buck. Let us know if we can help.:U:

HeavyChevyDMAX 01-11-2009 08:30 PM

so im lookin at exhaust kits and it doesnt say anything about including any catts in the turbo back kits. does that mean it uses the stock catt??

and also if you delete the catts and straight pipe it would it pass emissions in NY, bc i know a gass truck wont pass, but im still dont know much about diesel testing

theres a little drone while going 80, kinda have to talk loud to have a conversation, but u got a 6 speed so ur drone will be at a different speed.

normal driving it aint too bad at all, them lbz's and llys are quiter for some reason:humm:

You'll need to check local laws, BUT (in theory) if it came on the vehicle, it needs to stay on the vehicle, emissions wise.

K50 01-11-2009 09:45 PM

Yeah, if they test in NY and you remove the cat, it's probably a guarantee you'll fail...

HeavyChevyDMAX 01-12-2009 06:48 PM

damn, so is it a big sound diff if u leave the catts in??

K50 01-13-2009 10:36 AM

No, it's not that bad. My truck has no cat, but it's got the stock muffler, and it sounds virutally the same. The muffler by far makes the most difference.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Just get a good muffler, or no muffler, and you'll be fine. If they do emissions testing you'll have to keep the cat, but I'm not sure if there's a restriction on mufflers...

03maxpower 01-13-2009 12:03 PM

im thinking of 5 but may go with 4 not sure i have a stock truck and if i decide to go insane with it then go 5inch

2500HeavyDuty 01-13-2009 12:06 PM

4 inch is good for 500+hp and its less expensive

with a 5 inch you gain a few hp less then the 4inch with a stock turbo

03maxpower 01-13-2009 12:08 PM

so you think 4 inch is the way to go now?

powerstroking it up 01-13-2009 12:12 PM

i have a 4" down 5" tip mbrp exhaust on my powerstroke and my friends say they here me a 1/2 mile away and i have a cat.:dixie::dixie:

03maxpower 01-13-2009 12:15 PM

good i think thats what ill do for cost reasons also:c:

2500HeavyDuty 01-13-2009 12:18 PM

which ever one you want, but most people who want to get quick power on a budget get a 4 inch exhaust

i got a 5inch on mine and i love it its sooo loud

03maxpower 01-13-2009 12:21 PM

i was going to go with 5 but after reading your post and some others i was thinking four would work for now:rocking:

DIRTYMAX2004 01-13-2009 12:24 PM

i just have my stock 3.5" exhaust gutted... it only cost $100 (w/tip) depending on if you put a tip on... my friends say my truck sounds like a jet taking off when getting on it... while towing its hard to think at 75mph... and kicking it down at bout 30mph next to a car or truck it makes my ears ring if the windows are down... i had the same setup on my lb7 and my friends could here me comin from up to 2 miles depending on the day :U::w2:

Diesel Dawgs Performance 01-13-2009 05:41 PM

I had an 03 Dmax with 4" Straight Pipe and it sound great. The 03's didn't have Cats so I just went with a 4". We have a good 4" system that includes enough pipe so if down the road you want to remove the Cat then you can.

yes sir

HeavyChevyDMAX 01-14-2009 03:13 PM

nice! :U:

so i think im gunna go with the 4" MBRP turbo back no muff, but since NY does emissions testing im gunna keep the cat on, is she still gunna have a deep grumble?

Oilfield_Mafia 01-14-2009 03:44 PM

yep
