Default need a little more pep for towing

hey guys im not usually on the duramax forum but my bosses work truck needs some help. Its an 05 gmc auto alison tranny 70,000 miles, mason dump, dually( not sure on the axles). It gets worked almost everyday especially during the better times of the year cuz we are a landscaping crew. The truck just doesnt seem to have enought pep to get out of its own way when towing a 20' landscape trailer full of mowers and such. It really feels like its being choked by the stock intake and exhaust. Is that what could make it feel this way? Is there something i could do to it to help it out a bit so its not screaming up hills? Its very well maintaned and the tranny still feels pretty good. Any help would be great. Thanks

Yes the Turbo mouth piece (MP) is very restrictive on the 05 duramax model. you can pick up a new one for $93 shipping included at gmpartsdirect.com part number 98011736. Also the exhaust has just your standard cat and muffler. i took mine to a muffler shop and for $120 had the cat and muffler cut off and had straight pipe weilded in. but you can do the same thing with a sawz-all and some exhaust flex pipe 3.5 inch. The stock intake is good up to 500 HP, but you can pull the stock air box out and cut a 4 inch by 4 inch hole in the front of it (front being the side you are facing when you are standing at the bumper). make sure you cut below the fliter though. Also, just for giggles. i picked up a Hypertech power programer off craigslist for $100 and it adds 87 RWHP and 173 RWTQ. which put my truck at 350 RWHP and 650 RWTQ. I'm a budget builder and thus far i am very happy with my truck and ive only spent $345 in parts (bought a fuel filter aliminum plug for $38). but be careful, im guessign you aren't shooting to make this the craziest most powerful truck on the planet. but anything over 400 RWHP will most deffinatly require a transmission upgrade. But if you do the upgrade i told you about, (tuner optional, but it really helps, you could also go with other tuners but most you will have to run at lower levels) then your truck should run and tow better than ever. i know mine tows and runs great. i am runing about 18mpg highway and 15 in town

O if you decide to go with the HYPERTECH PROGRAMER, you can run it on level 3 out of 3 (87 RWHP 173 RWTQ) as you are not towing. If you are towing you will have to turn the tuner down to level 2 out of 3 (52 RWHP 108 RWTQ). all of hypertechs products are safe to run full out on a stock truck (unless you are towing) i dont tow anything yet but i know that i have been running the tune for about 2 weeks and the transmission quickly relearned how to shift with the extra HP/TQ. like i mentioned above the MPG, as long as you can keep the lead shoes on the closet, goes up to around 18 MPG. not sure MPG towing, but im sure it will be better that 10 MPG

The Hypertech products are All safe for towing in all 3 levels up to the max towing or load capacity as rated by the vehicle manufacturer.
If you are towing More than the vehicle is rated for you should change to a lower setting as needed.

Hypertech sells them, and they are usually pretty affordable, I might know where you can find one really cheap, Shoot me a PM
