First of all I would like to say hello, this is my first time to the site and have read some of the posts. I know that there are other posts on this subject but would like to ask the question specific for my truck. Last year my truck had a problem starting in cold weather and assumed that it was the glow plugs so I took it to a reputable diesel shop (I think) to have them tested they told me that they were good along with the relay but said that the fuel injectors were the fault of the starting problem. My question is, is this possible? So I told him that for that price to test and fix them I would rather trade it in and get a new truck. So the weather warmed up and the problem went away. Well now it is getting cold again and needless to say I still have the truck and the problem so I called the dealer to inquire about the fuel injectors being the problem. The mechanic at the dealer said that it is not likely that the injectors would cause the problem because the truck does not run bad once it starts. So here I am for a third opinion. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I am having the same prolems and my vote is glow plugs, I dont see how an injector can mess it up unless it is constantly dumping fuel in the cylinder and if it was youd know it -

i had the same problem with my truck. i have a 93 IDI and i know there are major differences between them, but try having your batteries tested. i had one bad battery and as soon as the temp went below 40 it would crank for a while and start hard. once i got a new battery it fired right up every time. if one of your batteries is bad, i would recommend replacing them both. -

scythe10318, thanks for the reply but I just cannot see that being the problem. the truck has no problem cranking even in the coldest temps. thanks again though.

my truck was cranking fast too, but with the one battery being shot it wouldnt start. if i were you, i would still get the batteries tested though. most auto parts dealers like advance or napa will do it for free. even if the batteries are not the problem you will still find out how good or bad they are and if they have to be replaced or not. -

Your thread went to the powerstroke section. My truck goes in this week for the glow plugs and it sounds like its doing the same thing, so I will let you know how I make out -

I checked the gpr with a test light and it does not have power on the glow plug side so monday morning I will go to the international dealer and pick up a gpr. when tried to take off the gpr it was actually fried under the rubber hood on the side that is always hot, anyone have any idea what could cause it to fry like that. When I turned the nut it just crumbled the plastic housing and the stud busted right out.

sounds like it's been really hot, like it's been shorted. when you change it check to see if there is a fuse that also may be blown. how long are you letting the glow plugs run before you're trying to start it? what is the out door temp? what grade oil are you using? all this will effect how it starts. -
