Thanks pastorjeep. But Definitely NOT DEAD. All is pretty well with my jeep, Today, just passed 6000 miles since conversion driving it daily with the aircon on. I am chasing a bit of a perceived EGT issue, and I am working on a K03-52 swap for the TD04 turbo, to see if that will help. Also still chasing the surging idle issue. I am not keen on taking the XJ off daily driver duty, at least in the peak of the summer. The Aircon in the XJ is freaking ARCTIC, and it never runs over about 180F on the water temp, even in extreme stop and go traffic. Best MPG so far is just under 40mpg, on the home leg of a 1000 mile round trip to New Orleans. Worst mpg was about 30 while sitting in mostly stop and a little go traffic with the Aircon on for several hours.

I would say you can push a GC with a v2203DI, you might want to put your GC on a diet. I would say put it on a scale to verify the weight before you commit. I am running a very lite 2 door 2wd XJ SE So pretty stripped down weight wise. I have not been to a scale with this exact jeep, but I am going to say I am at or just under 3500#'s, at least that is what my '01 2 door weighs all bone stock.
With that said I am going ahead and planning for a Kubota powered Dodge Dakota Sport supercab @ 4100#'s with a T56 6 speed trans.
I am pretty sure FTE will weigh in here soon as well. with a positive nod to the larger vehicle and extra weight.
Biggy thing though, what trans are you thinking about? as that choice is pretty critical, as well as the axle gear ratio, or ratios, 2 or 4wd?
have fun, and thanks again for your nice comment

The GC has 3:31 gears now. I have a friend with a reefer truck bone yard that will let me have an engine for a good price. He had about thirty last check. I have been gathering parts to put one in my ****** and then the GC came into my hand. That caused me to dig up all of you guys again. I was going to use a TF999 in the ****** so now I think I want to try the 42RE from the GC. I haven't found any threads where someone tried a auto trans. I was looking to use RED's adapter drawings for the jeep trans?

spoiler alert , Auto trans + Kubota not so good yet. you need to talk to FTE for Auto trans opinions, maybe he will ring in here pretty soon.
Pastor jeep is the GC a 2 or 4wd. a 3.31 might not be so bad a ratio with a good size tire

The *****'s will make a Awesome Kubota swap

The Grand is 4x4 with quadra-trac II. The ****** has a 2.8 v6 with a TF904 trans hooked to the Dana 18 TC right now. I have put 40,000 miles using WMO on a 6.9 and I want to convert my fleet to WMO. The DI Kubota seems to be a good WMO candidate?

to each his own on alternative fuels. I tried WVO and SVO in a benz. For me and the WVO was too much PIA for the results, SVO was better. But for me it is even more not worth it with the Kubota getting near 40mpg, and today diesel was $2.20/gal. I do think the Kubota's would be good on alternative fuel. If gas or diesel gets up over $4/gal; I may rethink alternative fuels again, but not today. I have a friend with a free supply of good WMO, and he loves the stuff. That is a whole different story than me driving around to restaurants with a home made suction rig getting some very nasty WVO from a filthy tank in the back parking lot. A whole other story there.

For Transmissions just my opinion, the more gears the better for the Kubota. Kubota has a pretty narrow power band. I am not sure I would go with an automatic, The TF904 would not be on my list unless I was staying off road all the time. The 42RE might be ok, BUT. Make sure you are up on electronic transmission control; or be ready for some trial and error. I am sure there are some folks out there that can help with the 42re, but I have no knowledge there.

So either the *****'s or the GC Get your engines, have some fun and start your build thread with lots of pictures. What part of the the country are you in?
There is a wealth of Jeep knowledge on this website and 4btswaps.com. so you have the knowledge base covered.

If there are 30 +/- Kubota v2203-DI engines in your friends bone yard, I am sure there are others needing parts and engines if he wants to get into the used Kubota engine market. I for one need a new stop solenoid for my next engine, and a whole lot of valve train and fuel injection parts for my non running spare. Also get yourself a spare flywheel cover in case there are adapter problems

have fun and keep us posted

A tale of three turbos. A update, the Kubota jeep has been on the road for a full year sharing daily driving with a Dakota. Just passing 8000 miles on the conversion. I have always felt there was just a little something not quite perfect on my setup. the jeep is a pretty great daily driver, but I am working toward something better than just great. My EGT's were almost always higher than I thought they should be, the power was good but not great, MPG was also very very good. I just felt there should be more in the little Kubota than I am getting. I started working on finding a better turbo charger first.
The first turbo I tried was a Mitsubishi TD04-10kyrc-5 was too big. 2nd was The VW 1.8 gasser turbo K03-29; about the same results as the TD04.. So now the 3rd turbo a IHI RHF4H from a 2.5 CRD euro spec jeep.
Much better than the other 2. I can still get the EGT to spike up pretty high, but I have to work at it a bit harder to get in the danger zone than I did with the other turbos. The IHI seems to spool faster and it is yielding almost double the boost as either of the other turbos at the same speed. Now at 65mph I am running about 8-10 psi, where before flat road cruising at 65 mph was about 4 psi. With the stock waste gate set up on the IHI I get boost up to just under 20#'s. but that 20#'s is pretty much ON rite now, as quick as you press the accelerator pedal.
This IHI turbo is great, but is there still a better turbo????

I am still in the road testing stage for the IHI turbo. I will not have MPG figures on the IHI for a few more days. but the initial impressions of the IHI are pretty good, and much better than the other 2 turbos.
but again is there still more to be had from this little engine. I think so.
After a lot of conversations with the other Kubota guys, I am going to advance my injector pump timing from the OE 5 deg BTDC to approx. 10 deg BTDC. This should reduce EGT's further I hope, and yield better performance all around I hope.
From what I can tell. 10 deg BTDC is pretty normal for a DI diesel. Where 5deg is not so standard. The racers are running up around 15deg BTDC, So I am hoping 10 deg will be pretty safe.
We will see on the timing in a few days, and then maybe I can keep working on the turbo size.
Also a nice development. I got the surging idle sorted out. I was going to open the pump up and start working on the governor spring again. That did not seem rite, as my max rpm is pretty good at about 3000 rpm from no load testing on the bench over a year ago. The fix for the surge was to remove the extra externalthrottle return spring I had installed. I pulled off the return spring and let the speed control arm sit, then I re set the idle speed with the extra spring off, and the only return spring in the system is from the pedal.

So the jeep is still in the works a bit longer, but it is almost where it needs to be.
A big shout out thank you to doudal from 4btswaps for helping me pick the 3rd turbo, or at least pointing me in the rite direction

for the pic the td04 is on the left, the K03 is in the middle, and the IHI is on the rite

a SMALL update. see the pic for the dyno #'s. Just under 80hp and 170 ft/lbs torque.
I am not at all sure how accurate these #'s are. This was my first time on a dyno. There was some talk of a 10% correction factor. Also the operator wanted me to make the pulls in a 1:1 ratio (4th gear), and if I understood correctly at a minimum of 3000rpm. I told the operator that would not work as I am maxed out on the governor at 3050 rpm. My engine seems to pull best in 3rd gear, so I hit about 20-22psi boost and under 1000 egt on my 3rd gear pull. I want to talk the dyno operator about how he compensated for the lack of a 1:1 ratio. I don't think the error could be too big As rangmar put down about 97hp on his dyno pull with the ranger
I think the jeep is running about as good as I can get it. I seem to have fallen short of my 40mpg goal. I have settled in at about 33-34 mpg for how I drive. Mostly highway and mixed highway at 75-78mph. my best mileage is still just under 40mpg, but that was at 55mph, and never over 60. Sort of unrealistic speed since most of the local roads are 75mph. If I drove IH35, or I37 at 55 mph I would probably be shot at. it also is not helping mpg that I just put on a new set of goodyear wrangler tires, no more street tires. I read something that new tires have higher rolling resistance than good used tires. I have lots of miles to drive this summer, So we will see if the mpg gets a bit better as the tires get broken in.
Still not horrible mileage for the speed I drive, and almost 700 miles to a tank of fuel.
I think better aerodynamics would make a big difference.

Your MPG is about what I get, but your EGT and boost numbers are low. If 20-22psi & 1000 EGT is all you produce then you still have HP & torque left. I get 27-28psi boost and can get 1200EGT if I keep my foot in it. Also, I believe Rangmar hit near 300 ft/lbs torque which is a big difference in what you turned out.

hey kubotaman, how have you been? now that I have had a chance to stew on it a bit, I don't think my dyno calibration or pull was very good. I think the #'s I got are very very skeptical. I think the #'s are just either no good or off. when I look at the dyno curves, they just seem really flat, except at the end when they drop like a rock. The curve is showing 55hp at 1800 rpm and 20mph in 3rd gear with virtually no load, that sounds hinky to me, I think it should be in the 30hp range at that speed and load. The Carrier trim is rated at 30ish hp at 1800 correct? I have not had a chance to talk to the dyno operator again, but I plan too. The dyno shop is set up to do 1000hp + dragsters, not my little jeep
On the boost, I am still running a wastegate, so I agree there is some more boost available, I am a bit concerned about blowing gaskets at the higher boost levels. on the EGT, in the real world at highway speed, I see in the mid 800's on the flats, but I can get into the high 1100 range on just a little to medium hill, and I can still hit 1200 pretty easy, if I don't let off, ( this at 70+mph in 5th). I don't get up in the high 1100's near as fast as I did with the other turbo's. Also the egt on the dyno pull is up and down so fast I don't think that was accurate either. The whole dyno pull from 20mph to 55mph, only lasts a few seconds. I did not get to time it, but the pull seemed to be over in under 10 seconds for sure. maybe the operator was not giving me enough load??
Heck the jeep runs pretty darn good, and that is what matters. I would be pretty hard pressed to find a SUV that even comes close to 30mpg at the speeds I drive; yes I can get good economy, but at a much lower speed.
