erratic shifting

today on my ride home from work my truck started shifting erratically up and down when it shifts it slams into gear. i got home and it was about a quart low so i topped it off and went for a short drive and it still shifts hard annd erratically. the truck is a 84 f250 6.9 auto with the c6.
