I explained this in a similar fashion to another guy who was wanting to put the GM NV4500 behind his 12 valve. Money talks, anything is possible with $$$. Best thing I could say is sell or trade the rebuilt trans for a NV4500 trans. Doing what he's wanting to do, is a waste of time, and money.

It will do fine as long as the 12 valve is not turned up to much. There is a guy on 4btswap forum that is running one in his 12 valve cummins suburban. Transmission had 100k when he did the motor swap. He reports the transmission is doing quite well behind the new motor.

A chevy adapter plate is made to do this swap. The early 12 valves are easiest to swap too. I would strongly suggest a good shift kit in the chevy trans to help it handle the torque of a good diesel. Transgo is my favorite.

I've been running a 4L80E behind my Cummins for 14 years with no problems. I run the trans with a TCI computer they were the only ones out there at the time. I have the 1st. generation there are a lot more manufactures out there now. And you can get torque converter at 1200 stall speeds. PATC makes just about everything you need.
Good luck

I run a th400 in my suburban with a cummins and tow 12000 lbs all the time with not problems.. a 400 and 4l80 has a lot of the same internals..if the trans was build rite it will be fine...

If you have a chance, or the means. You should try running the 4L80E the lock-up torque converter makes a world of difference.

I gave it thought but hate anything with computers..(there smarter that me) so I looked around and picked up a gear vender... it seems to be a good combo 373 gears with 35s and th400 with the gear vender..

Hi ya'll, I've been researching the topic as thoroughly as I can. Having just obtained a chevy dully with a dead 6.5 and 4L80E. I need to pull a 20,000 lb trailer cross country full time almost. What I've learned about the 6.5 engine, and the transmission, doesn't sound too good. Like maybe neither one will be reliable for what I need. So I'm thinking perhaps swapping to a cummins and NV4500 would be the thing to do. But that would mean installing a clutch peddle. I've been looking for info on fitting an Allison automatic to a chevy transfer case, but haven't seen anything definite on that yet.
