VW TDI Twins?

Has anyone every done that? I was under the car today fixing the lower intercooler pipe and noticed that there is tones of room down there for another charger.

Any ideas?:w2:

Yup! It's called a Toureg! lol

I'm not sure on how you'd get that little engine to hold the boost.

Wyatt Earp 09-03-2007 11:56 AM

well, stock it is good for no more than 24 psi. but if you put studs on it and a better gasket since the chargers are small - could you get it to 50?

Obviously you'd need a real front mount intercooler and some other mods as well but there appears to be enough room between the charger and the firewall.

How about s300/s400 twins...hahah jk. :tttt:

What are the smallest turbos that are readily available? Garrett or Holset or someother brand. I don't know spec's but what if you could get a 4cm housing and a 6 or 8cm housing?

I still think it can be done. The head on the motor would need beefing up because they don't hold too much boost but with a front mount intercooler and a set of studs that might be a bit better.

Ideas...

IHI, KKK, Mitsubishi, Garrett they all make some tiny turbos, use the stock for the smaller turbo, and look at some turbo small construction equipment for the slightly larger one, i know the perkapillars got some tiny turbos on them, check like a skid steer or a wood chipper or something with a tiny diesel in it

Stock turbo on a TDI is a Garrett VNT-15. Small turbos out there that are reasonably common are T-28 and T-3's. The latter has been SVO Mustangs and MANY of the 79-85 Turbo 3.0 Diesel Merecedes engines.

There is the GT series that goes down to a GT12, but that is WAY to small of flow. Minimum in the GT series I would consider would be a GT20.

Personally I think if I was going to change the wife's Turbo I would go to a Garrett VNT20. That is the turbo from an A6 Audi that had the 2.7 V6 in it. (circa 2004)

Just tossing this out....BUT what about a VNT-15 with say....an HX-35/14cm?

Dont thing the though hasnt crossed my mind with ours! hahaha.....

YMMOT 11-04-2007 10:57 AM

I still say a VNT-20 is more than enough. The VNT-20 has enough flow to provide a 2.7L V-6 265HP@5800RPMS and 258lbs-ft@1850RPMs. The Second turbo would just add complexity in the plumbing that you really don't need.

Wyatt Earp 11-04-2007 02:15 PM

True, but just to say you did it. Built it, marketed it and so on would be pretty cool.

DazedandConfused 11-04-2007 04:22 PM

I believe the Hy35 would be better then the HX since the HY has a 9cm housing on it. I agree though with just doing a larger single.

YMMOT 11-04-2007 05:53 PM

I've been eyeballing an HY35 with a 9cm housing for my Mercedes :U:

The VW 1.9TDI is out most popular engine to sell, and up there in price too.

From my experience, these are not the most reliable motor. I dont think they could take any more power. Just my 0.02

Wyatt Earp 11-11-2007 11:57 AM

the 1.9L TDI is the same price as the 1.8L Turbo gasser. No real difference in power but huge difference in economy.

They are very reliable and last forever given that they are limited in the boost department. Things start to go south quickly at 22 pounds of boost stock. Add a real gasket and some other beefed up parts and it would handle 40 pounds I'm guessing.
