I'd recommend cleaning the carbon out of the intake.

What code are your getting?

No one around here can pull the codes and when we tried the method of cycling the key nothing happend-----Give me help info please. As finances dont dictate a trip to the dealer for a couple of months----thnks in advance

Wyatt Earp 02-01-2008 09:09 AM

I agree. If you are shy on power the intake is likely carbonned up. It takes about 6 hours to remove, clean and reinstall if it is really bad.

The first time you remove it (or try) it will take some thought as it is hard to get out, not impossible though.

Codes sould also be a result of a dead MAF or broken or leaking vac line or any version there of.

WELP...got the Dodge back...and the wife has the car again........

BUT when I changed my coolant temp sensor (Which fixed my CEL issues) i noted a small coolant leak on the fnt lower part of the engine....i didn’t have time to mess with looking for it and pressure testing for it...but just wanted to know if there are any common leak points on the fnt of the engine...it seemed to be more around the injection pump area...but it leaked down and ran...so it was hard to pinpoint an exact location....

Ill get a pressure washer and clean all the red crust off and pressure test it one day to find the thing (BUT For now...its holding coolant and I got my wife to keep an eye on the coolant level)...but wanted to see if there were any common points to keep my eye on.....thanks!

Buckshotmckee 02-12-2008 04:17 PM

I don't see TDi's leak coolant. My guess though is, there is a plastic coolant flange that probably let loose and is leaking. I see these flanges leak more so on the 2.0 and 1.8 gas engines.

Im guessing its that 3 bolt plastic flange that goes through the bracket by the injection pump? Maybe the lower coolant line from the Radiator.....it was plastic....Simple o-ring fix in most cases? Or new Flange? Now that you mention it i think i remember seeing a "Bridge" of coolant residue between the flange and bracket...but wasn’t 100% sure.....ill have to put some pressure to it.......

OOO yeah...you will like this....im getting to the point where i am going to do my stacks......Yeah...im going to have to get new pipes for even me! haha.....the junk i have left over just isn’t worth messing with.......i apparently sold the ONLY 2 good pieces........to the guy you first saw the post on over at DTR.......

smoker72 02-12-2008 10:25 PM

would you like to see if tdi mpg will go higher?

You'll need the flange. It's plastic and they warp!

I was going to with a 6'in stack on the new truck, but now I'm think'n maybe 7'in! :choochoo:

GTIRHD 02-15-2008 01:35 PM

hte flange on teh front of the block uner the inj pump is more then likely the leak

Diesel-Dan 02-15-2008 01:36 PM

Thanks Guys...ill look into that next time i get the car.......now to go buy a est $100.00 piece of plastic.....haha:argh:

my 92 1.6 NA was doin the same thing, only mine would keep running at a idle, wouldnt rev up ... it was my injection pump, it would only pull enough fuel to idle but when u revved it ,it would stall

and dubdoc, u know me from CO ,, im in sussex nb:deal:

Buckshotmckee 02-26-2008 08:26 AM

Thanks!

I got it figured out this past weekend. I had the Ip timing off 180 deg. The timing marks on these 1.5 really suck! I had to pull the pump gear to get it lined up. Runs great! I just got to get a dial indicator and fine tune the Ip timing now.

Of course. Look me up at MVOC.:c:

As for the problem noted, WOW. The marks must be bad on a 1.5. Glad you got it sorted out.

I have no way of getting the codes----the way I have been told is cycle the key 3 times and count the flashes. If you have a back yard way let me know so I can throw the codes on the forum:sos:

That works on our truck but not the V-dubs. Go to autozone or a chiefs and they will scan them for free then report back to us.

Ppump12v 03-25-2008 11:37 PM

the car is a 98 new beetle----We dont have auto parts stores around here that can pull the codes in a vw---even our local tech school lacks the right cartridge for there reader

Buckshotmckee 03-25-2008 11:41 PM

There is no secret key trick or anything like that unfortunately. You can always buy a Vag-com?

DBogo 03-26-2008 12:02 AM

how bout 1.6 questions, can you do them too? if so mine is leaking coolent out of the overflow, and running slightly warm, just a hair above the middle line, any idea what that may be, im hoping its not a popped head gasket, i think it would get warmer then its getting if it was, any other suggestions, and also the tranny is hard to get into 1st and second, i replaced the shift linkage bushings but i have 4 tiny black ones left over and not a clue where they go, its still sloppy though, didnt help much, whats my next move there

Of course! I know quite abit about the older ones as well, probably more. VW still has the coolant bottles available, about $30 bucks if I recall, had to replace mine on my 78 wabbit. The bottle is larger, has a great capacity. It could be running a little warmer cause of the cracked coolant bottle not allowing the system to pressurize correctly. I would recommend replacing the thermostat with a 180 deg and replacing the fan switch with a lower one. I believe the fan kicks on around 210-215 to hot, to late in my book. The shift linkage has always been a problem! Dubdoc posted a link for a nice upgrade to the linkage, I'll try and find it. Service the trans and see if that helps with the hard shifting into 1st/2nd. Go down to a GM dealer and pick up a couple quarts of the GM syncromesh fluid, it has whale oil in it and works great!

You can't use a generic OBD-II scan tool? I did with our 2002 with a Snap-On Scanner......'98 should be OBD-II compliant (By Law).

BUT Vag-Com is the way to go if you can find someone that has it......do a search on here...i think i posted up a list of folks with Vag-Com....could be one close to you.

EDIT....here is the locator....
