Got the obd to work showed up a generic code for glow plugs and map sensor as well---this is like the third map sensor in the 200000 miles of the car---any guesses

I don't think I've ever seen a MAP sensor fault. If you getting the glowplug fault again, you need too replace the glowplug harness.

Hmmm...Tye - have you seen much in the way of wiring/electrical problems on TDI's? I posted on another forum and it seems there can be electrical problems with these things:

Just a FYI about the jetta tdi, my dad has a 99, bought new, great fuel economy and for the last 3 years has been chasing electrical gremlins. Nothing like sitting at the lights, all the windows roll themselves down and the horn starts blowing and the car shuts itself off. $1,400 to fix that. Then the speedo and temp gauge quit, $850. 3 wiring harnesses for the drivers door at 250 each and another 200 to install each time. Currently its up for sale, only 190k on the clock, but the electrical system on these vehicles is not made for our climate.

I have dealt with VW wiring gremlins in the past. They have got to be the coolest thing to work on. Really leave you scratching your head.
They are excellent cars, but I normally recommend replacing them before the warranty coverage runs out, or they get really expensive. Wiring is one of the reasons. Otherwise, great fuel economy, good power, solid little cars. No complaints at all about that.

I agree. Overall, I think they're a good car, and I'm looking to get one myself, but they do seem to have a lot of little quirks and glitches. Seen some ignition switch failures, lots of window regulators, and engine sensors. Their wiring diagrams are a real pain to follow too.

video apologizing for all the problems from Germany. Germany stepped in and took over the plant and started running it. |
A couple of these guys were telling me that the wiring issues seem to be related to a cold climate - doesnt sound right to me though.

Your right!
These cars are designed for the cold weather. Look how cold it gets in Germany! I've got V-dubs that all I do is maintenance, then I've got the ones with there own personal parking places. |
