what is the best kit level a 98 dodge

okay so my dad wants to run bigger tires like 35s maybe and i thought a leveling kit would be the best option untill i recently read a thread calling them death wobble starter kits. So now i'm wondering what is the right way to lift the front of the truck 2 inches.

CTD_Erik 08-06-2011 04:55 PM

The leveling kits do great. I have one on my 01. The 'death wobble starter kit' comes from the change in front end geometry. The leveling kit will not cause the death wobble per say, it will speed up the appearance of the DW if you have parts already wearing. I have 33/12.50/16 on my 01 and have no wobble at all. I am planning on redoing the front end to the 98-99 heavy duty front end soon though. But having good front end parts and a steering box brace will help prevent DW :rocking:

Captain Call 08-06-2011 09:09 PM

The old addage "you get what you pay for" applies here. Look into Kore or Carli for quality leveling kits.

1AMatt 08-09-2011 10:46 AM

Carli is very expensive but very nice. I believe Kore makes a nice kit with new springs and shocks, my friend has one in his and he loves it.

1993firstgennewbie 08-09-2011 03:16 PM

carli is 1300 bucks thats way too much:argh: kore is 399 that is a little better hes not lookin to go 4 wheeling with this truck so i think a basic kit would be best

1AMatt 08-09-2011 03:20 PM

400 Bucks sounds about right for the Kore kit. The Kore kit is nice too. I have always just done spacers though. Its really hard to get a 9000 Lb truck with a solid axle, and a diesel to ride good so why spend the extra money :c:

1993firstgennewbie 08-10-2011 01:10 PM

i think the spacers will probly be good to

vcustoms86 08-11-2011 11:16 AM

I put the 2in spacers from Top Gun Customs on. They are solid steel and reuse the rubber boot on the top of the coil. Put new shocks and front sterring stabilizer on at the same time. Didnt change how it drove. I run 315's. You have seen the pics of the brown truck. Only other thing I have put on is that steering box brace.:c:

1AMatt 08-16-2011 11:49 AM

Spacers are cheap and work fine. They will not break or sag either. It will ride like a dump truck tho lol

vcustoms86 08-17-2011 03:11 PM

I didnt notice a difference in ride. If i wanted it to ride like a cadillac though, i would of bought a cadillac. And depending on the coil spacer they are good. There are some polyurethane ones and some others but steel wont wear out and fall apart. :c:

bluedieselram 08-21-2011 02:41 PM

dayco has a good leveling kit for 129

Not spacer pucks, regardless of what they are made of.

Just wondering if we are asking the right question here, or trying to get a feel good on the DWSK angle?

Maybe the thread title should be: Can I get away with using spacers and not feel bad about it? :humm:

If you do, just make sure to get a longer track bar to go with them or I promise - you WILL regret it.

True and longer lower control arms.

NadirPoint 08-21-2011 05:38 PM

I don't know if I would recommend that HBS stuff. By the time you get those two things you are more than halfway there to a set of quality Kore springs/shocks/bar drops.

You gotta pony up +$ for a track bar either way. There's just no cheap way to do it right.

Very true, but its an option.:c:

Some of your comments make it seem like your going out of your way to be a dick. Coil spacers are fine if you do them right. Not all of us can afford a kore or carli leveling kit. I know I couldnt when i leveled mine. Aslong as he doesnt just put the coil spacer on it and go but also does the track bar, checks his tie rod ends and balljoints for wear, he will perfectly ok. Just cause you dont approve of something doesnt mean you have to tell everyone. We dont care. I hate stacks on trucks with a passion but thats my opinion and if someone asks the best way to do it i will help him out to the best of my ability. I do have a question though. I think you were in the service so were you enlisted or officer? :humm:

Let me elaborate on some of my comments, for your edification. If you'd been paying attention all along in this and other threads you'd already know these things. Don't YOU be a dick.

I've been running spacers and a track bar on my truck for over two years. and I never said there was anything fundamentally wrong with that in this or any other thread on the topic. I don't give a crap what you or anyone else doesn't care about. Get over yourself. And who the fawk is "we?"

The information I have given is not an opinion. It is hard assed fact, bud. If you don't believe it, fine, but don't come on here caling me a dick. You have no idea who you are dealing with.

If you think spacers is in any way shape or form the best way to lift a truck you are seriously misguided. The only way to use spacers is along with a track bar as a minimum. I've said that repeatedly. It's not a really great solution, but it works. What part of that don't you get?

Let me tell you a couple things I don't like at all, and actually really hate with a passion: 1) people who drive unsafe trucks, endagering themselves and others on the road. Now here's a question for you: Have you ever driven a truck experiencing full-blown DW at speed? If not, you need to STFU right now. 2) people I don't know getting in my personal business.

The OP asked for the best leveing kit. Spacers are definatly not the best, they are a cheap alternative that trades off some things for teh achieved lift, do they work? Yes. Do people get away with running them? Yes. Are they the best way to do it? Not by a long shot. They are definatly an option i done right.

Cant go wrong with these: Custom Suspension

aguilar_15 08-24-2011 09:54 PM

Question: What about the shocks? Can I get away with using the stock length ones or do I need to get the extended ones? I need ones anyways so I wanna get it right.

vcustoms86 08-25-2011 10:10 AM

I replaced the shocks on mine when i leveled it. Just got stock to a 2in lift ones. Dont need anything crazy. O-2", 1"-3", thats the size to get. Put the manifold on yet?:c:

I like the coils. Now this is for everyone who hasnt done this yet, is there a coil compresser big enough to fit these or stock coils? When I leveled mine I used the one you could get from Auto zone ( fit one side of the coil), so on the other side i used a rachet strap. Who makes one big enough for the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks? :c:

Unbolt the track bar, sway bar, shocks and undo teh brake line mount and let the front axle drop out.

Here is a quick write up on installing them easy in you driveway

vcustoms86 08-25-2011 01:02 PM

All i did when i did it was loosen the track bar and let the front axle swing down as far as it let it. I had already unbolted everything and didnt think of loosening the track bar til i had already taken the coil out. :argh: . Only way to learn is to do it. :c:

HAHA would you believe i haven't yet, but I'm slowly working on gettin it done :c:
Honestly, why don't any auto parts stores carry the right tools for our pickups, it's like they have no idea that there's a whole other world other than the wimpy half ton p/u out there. Although I did read somewhere someone did offer a coil compressor specifically for 3/4 an 1 ton p/u. I'll look into though :tu:

Found this on eBay.

Troy 1 Ton Hydraulic Coil Strut Spring Compressor Kit | eBay

NadirPoint 08-26-2011 02:40 AM

I thought a spring compressor was unnecessary. A floor jack under the axle is your spring compressor - with everything unbolted the axle drops and they fall out.

Thats what i had did when i did it. I jacked up the opposite side and let the other side drop down as far as it could go. Didnt think to loosen the track bar til i had the one coil out. Im about to take the ones out of my 2007 because I dont know if the previous owner did it right or what he used. All I know is the front sits higher than the rear and isnt close to level. :c:
