Hood Stack

Not sure if this is the right spot for this but I was wondering who all had pix of the single stack coming straight from the turbo out of the hood? What all is needed to do this? Post pix please

woodruff112 05-26-2010 11:03 PM

i was wondering the same thing... i have nvevr seen one on an 03 and up before.

dennhop 05-27-2010 07:40 PM

I don't have any pics, I'm not running one, but the way it works is you turn your exhaust manifold upside down, like you're mounting a twin setup, and then cut a hole in the hood. due to the nature of how the hood lifts up, the stack is mounted to the hood itself, so you can still lift the hood.

saw this one the other day

We went the easiest way possible. I didn't wanna get a reducer so we turned the 3" pipe off the turbo up and cut it. I welded a piece onto the 5" like a "bottom" but with a 3" hole in it in the right spot. The 3" goes about 2 inches into the 5" with a good fit. The 5" is welded to the hood as you can see. I was in too much of a hurry to care what the connection looked like.
All that was needed was a saw-zall or band saw, jig-saw, MIG machine for the thin metal on the hood, and I used SMAW welding machine out of preference on the 5".

id rather drive a civic with a fart pipe than a diesel with a hoodstack on the street.

diesels are the new rice.

hood stacks are for competition vehicles, not daily drivers with 200hp

99stackedpowerstroke 05-28-2010 08:55 AM

its street legal ta drive with hood stacks???? around here youll get pulled over in a heart beat, your pipe has to go back farther than your cab.

CountryGirl91 05-28-2010 09:36 AM

I've got my own reasons of why I put a hood stack on.
1. I didn't want holes in the flatbed I'll sell soon
2. too many people have bed stacks and you rarely see any bed stacks that look right/proportional
3. I wanted it to be louder and that was the only way

I hear cops are starting to stop people with any sort of stack on a reg. truck here. One guy got 2 tickets for his bed stacks- 1 was emissions and the other was noise. Cops have seen mine but I don't act like an ass with it and it's not a daily for me.

I know hood stacks are normally seen on pull-trucks but I wouldn't necessarily say it's just for them. If someone wanted to make their truck look like a pull/competition-truck when it's stock, then maybe that's a different story but that's not my case.

Deezel Stink3r 05-28-2010 11:50 AM

I would rather walk than driving a Civic with or without fart can...
our saftey inspection and police officers would get a heartattack if they would see hood stacks. You have no idea how jealous I am.:c:

WHAT HE SAID.

CountryGirl91 05-28-2010 01:08 PM

That's a new one.

If you wanna say hood stacks are for pull-trucks, then why wouldn't stacks behind a cab be just for 18-wheelers?

crzycowboy 05-28-2010 01:09 PM

Here ya go.

Flipping the manifold is a stupid idea - the turbo drain line will be on the top.

Sorry, not trying to be rude, but it's rained with my truck in the yard for weeks... And no problem... Park your truck in the rain for a few weeks.... What happens???

Unless you've got a pretty good sized hole in the bottom of your hood stack, that water is going into your turbo... If you're lucky.

Really??? Really really???

I would hope your joking, otherwise you need to really open the hood and look at your turbo and how it is built...

Its called not running a competition only setup on a street truck. I have one very good reason not to run a hood stack, if you drag race, and you go to certain races that are sanctioned, you WILL be thrown in pro street with a hood stack. No matter whats done to the truck. As for stacks being for big rigs, a lot of competition guys, myself included are required to have vertical exhaust for their organization, just in case your turbo blows apart and decides to depart the vehicle via the exhaust.

My truck with a shorty single in the bed.

What do you think?
8" hood stack on my '97

Easy as pie to do. 4" 90° to a 45° up into the 8" stack

Plastic would only melt.... No big deal.

Now I have a picture of a hood stack with melted Folgers can running down the side like a red and chrome candle. :D

Do you really think if you started the truck with the can on the stack it would stay there long enough to melt :s:

I think if you're dumb enough to put a hoodstack on your DD, anything is possible...

What if you drive the truck to work and park it, and you get really busy doing something, and it starts raining... OK... Water in your turbo... Not good.

On the other hand, are you going to wait outside for 20 minutes until that piece of metal cools down enough to put your plastic folgers can on?? Am I missing something?

I have an exhaust system, I don't run any stack, and if someone choses to run a hood stack I'm not gonna worry myself about water in Thier turbo :tttt:

No doubt! When I said "if you're dumb enough" I didn't mean you. Sorry for the confusion.

hood stacks are not really my thing... but you gotta love when people get angry and act you are ruining the hobby by doing something to your truck that they dont like.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

and lets be honest if anything is ruining the rep of our hobby its the powerstroke. :tttt:

If your real advanced or smart you would just put a rain flap on it and not have to worry

monster12valve 09-26-2010 05:38 AM

or you could just fabricate a stainless steel coffee can then it wouldnt rust or melt or you could just not worry about it

PLMCRZY 10-05-2010 10:49 PM

I dont think anyone really gets the point i guess.

HOODSTACKS ARE RETARDED ON DD's plain and simple. If you think you look cool driving around town with a shiny pipe thru your hood think again.
