How do you launch at the track?

I am interested in how people launch there trucks at the track and I'm sure it depends on the bombs you have, the experience, and just personal opinion but it should be cool to see how everyone does it.

I have an 01 2500 Automatic 4x4, anyone have any tips on how I should launch it for the first time?

bowtech 06-18-2009 11:49 AM

you power brake it till the turbo is spooled up then take off

24v'd_Fury 06-18-2009 11:35 PM

thats it? knowone else does 4x4 launches and what not?

1badcummins 06-18-2009 11:38 PM

mine is a standard i launch in 4wd in 2nd gear

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

at 3500 rpm i roll the clutch out not drop it

RSWORDS 06-19-2009 07:57 AM

4wd build some boost and go! You will have to try a couple different boost levels to find what works for you. My 06 leaves harder at 10psi then it does 15psi. The 89 leaves just as hard at either but the tranny temps REALLY go up trying to build the 15psi so I usually leave around 10

biged681985 06-19-2009 08:58 AM

with a stock tranny, i would be weary of doin a boosted launch at any more than bout 5 psi in 4wd. thats what im leaving at right now till i get a new billet input shaft for the tranny. heard of to many breaking. now i have done a 20psi launch on the street, but i wouldnt recomend it for some one else doing it. jmo

RSWORDS 06-19-2009 09:44 AM

Good advice Ed. I've gotten away with them in the 06 but it is only a matter of time.

24v'd_Fury 06-19-2009 11:22 PM

how much air did you drop your tires too?
i'm probably going to try 5psi boost with 25-30 psi in the rear tires and 3 wheel drive
overdrive on or off or my auto?

24v'd_Fury 06-22-2009 10:01 AM

Do I take it outta 4 wheel drive after I launch or just leave it?

biged681985 06-22-2009 10:21 AM

im not sure since ive only raced in tulsa once, but i reach down and knock mine out of 4wd bout 1/8th mile

Lostnwalmart 06-22-2009 02:00 PM

if its an auto it wont disengauge 4wd untill you let off the gas :choochoo:

24v'd_Fury 06-22-2009 10:57 PM

Think it'll be bad news if I just keep it in 4 till the end of the track? I dont wanna let off til its over.
Been brake standing to build boost and launching in 2wd behind my job to practice and it seems ok, think that'll be ok to do if I air down or is 4wd th way to go?

94cummins12v 06-22-2009 11:30 PM

since i have a electronic hub control i put it in 4x4 with the hubs locked, put it in 2nd with the boost around 12 then dompletly drop the clutch after i hit 5th i hit the hub control swithc that disengages the front axle. ive never done a drag on a track just around hear were the roads arnt populated enough but are still paved

24v'd_Fury 07-02-2009 09:59 PM

Thank you, I have the manual 4WD shifter on the floor so I'm not sure I wanna be messing with it going down the track. The last thing I need is to grenade the T-case.

dodgethis69 07-20-2009 10:20 AM

Thats a good ? how much psi do you leave in the rear tires when your at the strip?

trucky 05-13-2010 12:50 PM

i shift mine outta 4wd at half track you can feel yourself pick up speed
:choochoo:

GmcLbz 05-27-2010 06:30 PM

I usually leave around 20-25 psi. With street tires I found that around 35-38 psi in the front and 30-32 psi in the rear worked well.

cummins2005pw 05-28-2010 03:27 PM

i leave at about 30 pounds of boost in 4 high and leave it in 4 high all the way through. i tried leaving in 2wd and just blowed the tires away at 10 pounds of boost. with no boost my truck breaks lose after it rolls out about 10 or 15 ft.

sstockton 06-07-2010 11:37 PM

Yeah, I usually leave the line at 30psi boost. Put about 38psi in my tires, and leave it in 4hi the whole time. My truck isn't particularly fast, but crossing the line at 103mph I haven't had any tcase issues yet. I know other people that leave the tcase in up to nearly 130 and don't have issues. Thats in a 3rd gen though.
Sean

havasued 06-08-2010 01:15 AM

I just hold the foot brake until the boost comes up
Ed

Preacher 06-13-2010 02:33 PM

I do a small burnout if I can't avoid the water box, then click 4hi on, T/H mode, and turn OD off if its 1/8th mile. Roll in and light my pre-stage lights, bring it up on boost to about 15 psi, then creep into stage lights, as soon as I see the third amber I let off the brake and nail it. I run 30 psi front, 25 psi rear running Nitto highway terrains in 325/60R18.

01quadcab 06-16-2010 10:29 AM

I leave at about 30psi boost and tires are at 40 around the truck. I used to click it out of 4wd just after the 60', but now I have to drive the truck a little more, so I take it out once I finish so it's easier to turn off the track. If your doing boosted launches with a factory output it will last till right around 500hp and then it will snap

SaltwateR.CowboY 07-05-2010 07:29 AM

What gear do you guys take off in on the track with a 5 or 6 speed? I have a 5 speed and I rarely use first even when daily driving. We also have a 6 speed and im thinking of taking it to the track but i heard from someone that you can take off in third as quick as you can in 2nd on a 5 speed? Just wondering. Would try it but dads getting some head work done :tu:

i leave mine in 4wd all the way til i pass the finish line and then shift it into 2wd or when you turn off the shutdown lane its gonna grind and that no good :tu:

sinwagon 07-06-2010 12:45 PM

i have only ran in the 1/8th i have tried a couple of different ways to launch. with an auto it will be easy to build boost for launch, with my 6 speed it is tricky and hard to get a consistant reaction time. i have launched in 3rd with my 6 speed but u have to build boost and have to drag the clutch to keep it from bogging. my best times came from no boost and 2500 rpm launch. i leave it is 4x4 all the way through the traps and it ran a best of 9.2

KingCopa 08-11-2010 08:41 PM

Does the 48re have problems with the input shafts? Is it the 4wd launches that does it or is 2wd just as hard on em?

megacab 08-13-2010 05:21 PM

spool it up and let it fly 4 wheel drive CAUTION you may break a inuput shaft if it is stock or a fexplate:rocking:

1st_gen_puller 08-13-2010 09:54 PM

lol 43 lbs of boost on a 62/80 turbo 4wd 3rd gear 6 speed.. 3.54's.. it went pop i went sh!t.. lol hey i got 2 output shafts for the price of one now.. lol...damn its fun watching the passengers face after u pin them to the seat and smoke all 4 tires off..

TTCummins 10-01-2011 01:45 PM

Made consistent 14.2 passes launching in 2wd with 35" tires and I still spun one time. I have a built auto trans, but will the transfer case in these cummins trucks hold up with 4wd boost launches or at 100+MPH?

Don't worry about keeping it in 4WD, straight line for less than 20 seconds at a time balls to the wall won't hurt it, high speed turns in 4WD are what cause "rapid disassemble." Just take it out of 4H and back into 2H when you pass the time boards because it's a royal pain trying to make that turn onto the return road with the front axle locked.

lopez dodge 10-07-2011 01:54 PM

i run in 4wd the entire way . once i pass the lights i shift back to 2wd.
made probly 30-40 passes this way no problems

2001SilverBullet 10-07-2011 04:15 PM

As I pull into the staging area I adjust my torque converter lock up to the lowest setting, chip to the highest setting, turn on my water meth and BD Rad Box , I drop my truck in to 4High and then pull up for until I get my first light then I slowly build boost to around 25 PSI and pull forward until I am fully staged while still maintaining my boost once my light changes I push the accelerator to the floor and wait for the truck to switch to second gear then I switch out of 4High in to 2wd and the rest is history.

EasternAggie 11-20-2011 06:21 PM

I kinda guessed at it today, wasnt the best but it was my first try too. I need to get a dual disk (and limited slip) and master the slipping the clutch while building boost concept :humm:

PSD-BLACK-CLOUD 11-20-2011 06:53 PM

I launch in 4h at 10-20 psi but I did launch with it at 40 psi one time:ouch: and I didnt run any better of a time.

40psi launch!?!?! Good recipe for a rapid disassemble if you ask me. Lol.

PSD-BLACK-CLOUD 11-25-2011 10:43 AM

I dont like loseing. LOL

PSD-BLACK-CLOUD 11-25-2011 06:56 PM

That wasnt a very hard launch

BC847 11-25-2011 07:51 PM

It's a dinky stock/OEM 12mm Rotary VE injection pump with 240k miles on it pushing 6400lbs. 1.75 60' in the above vid (250ish'). It's best is 1.69 with good beach air. Work with me. ;)

In that run, I'm establishing a baseline with the trans shifting fully automatically. I'm thinking I need to raise the overall shift-points. A later run with shifting manually from second to third (and letting second wind-up a little more), brought the ET down to a 7.99 with a 1.73 60'. (To muddy that results is the fact the quicker run started at about 2200rpm vs 1900rpm in the first :( ).
