Pump Shotguns

Im in the market for a economically priced pump. Went to a few dealers and swung some around and they all feel around the same weight wise and fel good.Just wondering what some of you guys have and how you like them.Trying to avoid a "newer" remington 870 express cause i heard they arent that welll made. The new weatherbys look nice too like the wingmasters

akguppy 08-03-2010 04:47 AM

Don't know who you've been listening to, but the 870 is hard to beat.

smokeeaterlb7 08-03-2010 05:22 AM

stay away from any mossberg 500. i hate mine. everyone i have had my hands on, the "pump" rattles back and forth. and the butt stock is ridiculously short and i am average sized.

I have a few 870 Remington shotguns, they are hard to beat and they function under the most adverse conditions you could imagine. Here is a picture of my favorite sidearm, Serbu super-shorty 870. :rocking: Nothing breaks the language barrier like the sound of round being chambered in a pump shotgun.

RAW 08-03-2010 08:19 AM

I have a Benelli Nova 12ga. pump action shotgun. They are a little heavier and longer than the norm, coming at you with a 28" barrel. Some really great features are that it is chambered for 3 1/2", and has a magazine disconnect. Doesn't have the same feel as an old Wing Master, but I believe it will last me a long time.

I love my 870. Its an old 1960 Wingmaster that I'm rebuilding, as I get money, as a more tactical gun rather than a bird gun. My plan is to buy a newer gun for hunting. I got the gun with no stock so I bought the Blackhawk Knoxx adjustable stock and I don't really care for it. I'm going to sell it and switch it out for a Speedfeed unit. Then its got a 28" barrel that I'm going to switch out for a shorter one. I haven't put 500 rounds through it yet but its great, hasn't jammed, no other issues, parts are easy to find and relatively cheap. Remington will be my first choice when it come to shotguns.

SmokiinRam 08-03-2010 01:26 PM

from what i hear the 870s are the standard. but reason i said i want to stay away from the new "express" models is ive heard alot about the matte finish makes the shells jam when ejected.and most things aret made like they used to so i might wanna do some searching for an older one or a wingmaster

DieselCrawler 08-03-2010 02:27 PM

i like my mossberg 500. use it for everything, got 3 different barrels for it.

i love my ithaca 20 gauge for bird huntin.

SmokiinRam 08-03-2010 02:43 PM

ithaca is another i was considering or a super nova benelli

If that is actually your weapon, I sure wouldn't be showing pics of it on the net, or anywhere else for that matter! Unless you have a NFA (National Firearms Act) tax-stamped, class III weapons permit and all the required paperwork, that thing will land you about 10 years Federal prison!

From a NFA webpage:

The term "short-barreled shotgun" means a shotgun having one or more barrels less than eighteen inches in length and any weapon made from a shotgun (whether by alteration, modification, or otherwise) if such weapon as modified has an overall length of less than twenty-six inches. [18 USCS § 921]

Violations of the Act are punishable by up to 10 years in federal prison and forfeiture of all devices or firearms in violation, and the individual's right to own or possess firearms in the future. The Act provides for a penalty of $10,000 for certain violations.[6] A willful attempt to evade or defeat a tax imposed by the Act is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a $100,000 fine ($500,000 in the case of a corporation or trust), under the general tax evasion statute.[7] For an individual, the felony fine of $100,000 for tax evasion could be increased to $250,000.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I feel this needed to be addressed.

Nothing at all wrong with the new 870 Express shotguns. The "coating" is the same Parkerizing they've used for decades.

I love my 500, and while yes it rattels it has never miss fired on me and I abuse the hell out of it. Its the gun that goes out in the rain, snow, sand, dirt, marsh, ect. Pretty much any were I don't wanna take my Berretta auto. IMO Good cheap gun.

As for the stick mine feels the same as the 870 and the Beretta 390.

SmokiinRam 08-03-2010 04:48 PM

dam begle wanna go bird huntin? lol if only i could get my hands on a decent used 3" chamber wingmaster..

Begle1 08-03-2010 04:55 PM

I only hunt for bad people. I'm the country's greatest vigilante that the FBI doesn't know about, because as long as I flush twice I leave no evidence.

lobsterman04 08-03-2010 05:50 PM

The 870 express super mag is chambered for 2.75,3, and 3.5 inch shells. I love mine. But when it comes down to it you can't go wrong with the moss 500 either. Both are worth what you pay and aftermarket options are endless.

cummins freak 08-03-2010 07:21 PM

hey if your buying a pump action shotgun and buy anything but an 870 rem. your a fool. just my $0.02

gunman41mag 08-03-2010 08:29 PM

I have a MAVRICK 88(same as a mossberg 500) MOSSBERG 590 MARINER, and TWO BENELLI M1 SUPER 90 SEMI-AUTO:jump: The MAVRICK 88 is kept in my truck, in case of carjackers:bat: The MOSSBERG 590 MARINER in the closet, in case of home invaders:bat: The TWO BENELLI M1 SUPER 90 in a safe place:w2::w2:

benellis are great guns. i have a nova and 2 super black eagles and i love them all.:tu:

RAW 08-03-2010 09:22 PM

Hell yeah! I was wonder how long it would take for an agreement!

00CamaroSS 08-03-2010 09:23 PM

I have several shotguns:

Benelli M3 Super 90
Browing A5
Browning BPS 10ga
Remington 870
Remington 1100
Winchester 1300

I have shot Mossberg 500's and Benelli Super Nova's. In a pump I prefer a Benelli or my 1300. Though the 870 I have is parkerized and I hate it. It is very hard to keep the finish looking clean and it won't eject low brass shells. I have shot blued 870's and they don't seem to have those problems.

Most of it is going to be personal preference, how much you want to spend and what you want it for.

00CamaroSS 08-03-2010 09:30 PM

Thats where the Benelli M3 comes in. Semi auto, 9 round capacity and folding stock lol oh and my Remington is a short barrel w/ side saddle and surefire lighted grip. :rocking:

But I couldn't agree more.

You'll need the pump when you shoot rubber buck shots:humm:

Or rubber fin rockets (rubber slugs) or Bird bombs (arial flashbang) or flechet rounds

RAW 08-03-2010 09:56 PM

So, a little off topic, but has anyone found shot larger than T chambered in 3 1/2"?

00CamaroSS 08-03-2010 09:59 PM

No can't say that I have but I've never looked. Have you tried looking online at places like Shooting Supplies, Reloading, Gunsmithing, Hunting, Ammunition, Gun Parts & Rifle Scopes — MidwayUSA ?

joebob3093 08-03-2010 10:04 PM

whinchester model 12 is the best pump shot ever made in my opinion. i put a few hundered rounds threw mine every month. it was made in 1919 and works just as good as the day it was made.

SmokiinRam 08-03-2010 10:18 PM

i kinda want a supermag because i might want to fire off some 3.5" bucks every now and then for shits nd gigs..or slip them in the chamber for the girlfriend :w2:

rednekroper05 08-03-2010 11:47 PM

I can say i like a older 870 for hunting but then i cant beat my mavrick 88 for a home defense cause it was cheap and use the same parts as a 500.

or slip them in the chamber for the girlfriend
Ha ha thats funny i cant even get mine to shoot my 88 with a 18 1/2" barrel with just #8 birdshot

Blue9573 08-04-2010 03:32 AM

you cant really go wrong with the older 870s.

:humm: I like being called out on the mat..........This is my shotgun and it was purchased and transferred legally thru Class III dealers. It is perfectly legal for an individual to own these types of weapons if you can get a CLEO to finger print & sign off, a Corporation or Trust are two other ways. Your state and local gov have to be gun friendly also.
I don't know were you got the misinformation about needing a CLASS III WEAPONS PERMIT, I have never heard of that before. :humm:
The Serbu is considered an AOW (Any Other Weapon) by the BATFE and it's a $5.00 tax stamp.
Please contact a local Dealer and find out for your self. http://www.nfadealers.com/

If your going to Hi-Jack a thread please do your homework.

Now back to the subject at hand...........Buy an 870 or a Model 37 Parkarized Ithaca both are very reliable.

The only failures that I've experienced are a worn out bottom Extractor and Extractor spring but that was after shooting thousands of rounds thru it over the years. Both of the items and many more parts are readily available. @ http://www.diamondgunsmithing.com/pa...23/page23.html This guy has 28 years experience as Ithaca Gun's Head Gunsmith :w2:
