To make a long story short, I think my 5.9 CTD in my 2007 Dodge is toast. I won't know what's wrong with it until I get it torn down. In the meanwhile, I've been preparing for the worst and have located a 5.9 Cummins out of a 2008 school bus.

My questions are:
Is there any differences in the block between these two motors?

Is there a difference between blocks that come with automatic transmissions and standard. The reason I ask is because the bus had an automatic and my truck is a 6 speed. If there is a difference, does somebody make an adapter to mate the auto block to my standard.

I know that the bus motor has an air compressor on the front cover for the bus's air brakes. I think that I can change out the front covers from my motor to the bus motor but I'm not sure.

I haven't actually seen the motor yet but going by what my dad told me, it looks like the exhaust manifold is a different style and possibly the intake side as well, but I think I can swap everything from my motor to the bus's. My main concern is if the blocks are the same.

Will my electronics run the bus motor?

Are you sure it's a 5.9? All the block bosses are the same so you can bolt right on and go. You'll just have to swap all your stuff to the bus engine.

 

I'm not 100% certain that it's a 5.9 but the mechanic at the school that took it out said it was. That's good to know that all my stuff will bolt right up. Is there gonna be a problem since the bus had an automatic and I've got a standard? Is there a difference in the cranks where the flex plates mount like different numbers of holes?

 

I'd suggest verification by block casting numbers or some other method more reliable than a say-so because '07 was the year Dodge started the 6.7. Probably has nothing to do with the bus manufacturers, but just in case...

5.9 production ended in June 2009, so I'm sure alot of them made it into buses through their 2010 model years. What engines were actually installed would be somewhat optional during the crossover years through the 2007-2009 period, depending on contracts, timing thereof, etc...

 

Where can I find casting numbers?

 

5.9 block casting is usually on the lower pass side, just above the oil pan. But there are variations in where the block casting can be found depending on where it was manufactured, and other vagaries. You just have to look. I've never seen a 6.7 in person, but I believe the easiest way to tell them apart is from the turbo back. 6.7 will have the VGT turbo and a DPF in the exhaust behind it. 5.9 has the CW turbo and no DPF.

 

It won't be any trouble getting the casting numbers off the motor as it is already removed from the bus. Thanks. I'll post the numbers up as soon as I get them.

you might get lucky and have a allison behind that cummins becuase alot of those commercial cummins has the allison.
