:pca1: dang thats alot of damage for an injector:argh:

Whit 03-08-2009 08:42 AM

yep..........alot of work just from an injector tip :ouch::ouch::ouch:

cool pics man

Chief Engineer 03-08-2009 09:13 AM

Either the injector piece or a chunk of a valve got ingested by the turbo on that bank (engine has two turbos, one for each bank of cylinders) and fubar'd it as well. The engine was basically totally rebuilt with all new liners, heads, turbo's, crank, etc.

txredman 03-08-2009 10:39 AM

Ouch!! :ouch: Bet that was a cheap fix

redneckbuckeye 03-08-2009 11:16 AM

ouch, what caused the tip of the injector to sheer off?

mikmaze 03-08-2009 11:29 AM

looking at the pic of the head, with three valves messed up, I would bet a valve snapped, taking the tip out and the other two valves as well...... one man sittin in a chair, thousand miles away guess.

what Ci and numbers does a cat that big put down? Considering some of the guys here have their 5.9's putting down Kenworth type HP and torque figures I'm a little curious and ya have any pictures of the ship that thing powers?

If I remember right the Cat 3516C marines engines are made to run 1600-1800 rpm( so they are a lower rpm application than the 5.9 Cummins) and produce 120-160 hp per cylinder. It has been A while since I have looked any of the paper work from the dynos but it seems like thats in the neighborhood I remember,

angelic0- 06-06-2009 01:12 PM

i recall 3516C being putting out 187hp per cylinder & being 4210 Ci

~3000hp rating @ 1650rpm

*edit*

Sorry, 3000hp is rated for a marine engine that has been modified in a big trawler here in Iceland

OEM is 2,350 bhp

Hey Chief, those are some great pics, but don't you have some z-drives to work on or something??!?:w2:

Chief Engineer 06-29-2009 07:47 AM

Hey, go make a round!

yankeeflatsdiesel 06-29-2009 10:14 AM

nice pics been a while since i have seen carnage that bad. hate to see the repair bill on that particular engine, we had a few 3508 powered 777 haul trucks and the repair bills were quite high when the engine had issues.:ouch:

Chief Engineer 06-30-2009 10:21 AM

it was still under warranty, so they avoided a big bill.

Riflemanusmc 07-08-2009 07:23 PM

Hey Chief... I've seen way too many tips blown off on C7's. Being a FORMER shop forman for a Cat dealer. The great pic's that you posted, reminds me of why one needs to keep track of water in the fuel. Thanks for the pics....

whiskyBound 07-18-2009 01:14 PM

wow.....that's @#$in serious git r dun right there........what in the hell does that thing push on water?

Paul Gorsky 06-01-2012 10:19 PM

Found this while doing a search - sorry to bring up a REALLY old post, it amazes me that this was still happening - first time I saw this almost EXACT same failure was on a 3508 main in 1999-2000 time frame - it was a valve stem failure - dropped the valve and wrecked all types of havoc
