Hood Stack Installed!!!

3 Attachment(s)
I finally grabbed my balls and did it! lol.... i've been wanting to since last summer/fall... but i've spent more time working on the transmission and a million other things on it since then than i have driving it... This truck has come a long way from how it was when i bought it bone stock 2 years ago, and it still has a LOOONG way to go before i'm done lol...

And yes this is my daily driver!!!! Been driving like this several days with the hood stack and haven't gotten a look from a cop yet. Last fall I checked with the state police who said there isn't a law against it, it would just depend on the officer pulling me over.. as for it being obstruction of vision, its alot less of an obstruction than my mirrors or an A pillar. But then i realize you can't really tell a cop that. And i figured it would get a buncha crap on my windsheild and roof, it don't! The airstream flowing over top of the truck carries it up and away!

Anyway i'll cut the crap, here's pics!!!! The stack is 5" chrome, i want to miter cut it i just haven't decided exactly which direction i want it to face, either passenger side or rear.. (Sorry i'm just a big miter cut kinda guy)....

Here's a really crappy video from my phone (hey my cheap digital camera doesn't have sound) http://s14.photobucket.com/albums/a343/BushHogBoy/?action=view&current=0411082023.flv

GIMME FEEDBACK GUYS!!!! :choochoo:

Pics under hood?

BigBlue12V 04-13-2008 09:54 PM

Thanks guys!!! I love it so far!!!!!! If i remember i will get pics underhood tomorrow. Its no louder than regular stacks in the bed, surprisingly its about the same. I put 305 tires on it and towed my neighbor's 5th wheel camper with it today about an hour drive and we went up and down some good sized hills, it rumbles a bit goin up hills but like i said about the same as regular straight pipe stacks (off topic, but speaking of which, what stacks AREN'T straight piped on a diesel pickup? LOL)... My neighbor had a good time riding in the truck, lugging down to 400 RPM around turns in 3rd or 4th gear and walking straight up hills in overdrive without losing a single MPH, then accelerating up those hills haha... he's just got a F350 with a 460 (it dropped a valve with 500 miles on the rebuilt engine is why i was towing his camper). I ALWAYS try to rub in the torque because for years i been tryin to get him into a Cummins but he's too set on Fords!!! He's always talk about puttin one in his F350 but i think he's scared of it or doesn't have the money to do it one or the other.

Anyway thought it was story time. I was gettin out of his camper earlier while we were hooking it up and loading up and i kinda bounced down the steps and landed on a plastic cup on the ground and rolled my freakin ankle super bad, we had to drive about 50 miles that clutch was killing me!!!!! (left ankle) I'm hurtin laid up in bed so i get to ramble to you guys haha... anyway so far no flack from the fuzz bout the hoodstack and i do love it, get a TON of looks and comments on it!!!!!!!

Haha thats funny!!! Thanks guys, i spent around 8 hrs on the project...

Here's a couple under hood shots and closer up shots. I know, its filthy under the hood..... While most are flipping their turbos and manifolds to do a hoodstack on a single turbo, I made my own "up-pipe" instead. I think i only got away with it because of the body lift i have on the truck... I very seriously doubt that it would have enough clearance to do this without. Its double wrapped in 1500 degree exhaust insulative wrap. I made the pipe by cutting pie shaped sections out and welding the pipe together. There's close to 20 bead-rings of weld around that pipe, if not more... But the up-pipe is 4" and the hood stack is 5" so it just closes down over top of the up-pipe which gives them about 1.5-2" overlap.

I still want to miter cut it i just not sure which direction i want the miter cut to. Either passenger side or rear side.

I agree. the mitre cut would look nice with the highest part towards the windshield

are you serious? do they do that where you're from? I've never seen a miter cut stack facing forward, and i hope i never do! No disrespect intended but that isn't exactly the look i'm going for and i have never seen that done before...

Holy get up on the wrong side of the bed.
I haven't seen any mitre cut stacks out of the hood so I'll have to say thats not how they do it from where I'm from.
I agree stacks in the bed need to have the cut the other way but I think it would look funny on a stack coming out of the hood.
it wouldn't follow the line of the truck and blow smoke on your windshield if shortened and cut the way you say. don't post pictures on a public forum and not expect to get different opinions than yours. It was merely a suggestion of how I would try it if it were me. if it looked better the other way than i would change it. chill out a bit

PS I know how mitres are supposed to face. in this application it might look better the opposite way.

whats wrong with posting pictures of both ways and voting on it? or have someone photo chop it.

jesus don't get all bent out of shape.

BigBlue12V 04-15-2008 10:12 AM

sorry man i wasn't tryin to be jumpy. I just can't picture that lookin good to me personally... hey yea if anyone wants to photochop go right ahead i'm open to suggestions. i was just tryin to be funny there in my last reply... wasn't tryin to jump your case man...

GRI 04-15-2008 10:24 AM

not a problem, I was just giving my thought

BigBlue12V 04-15-2008 11:39 AM

yea dude i didn't mean to sound like a prick... me and the guys at work pick on each other real bad all the time (maybe not a great habit, but its entertaining and helps pass the time...) we just constantly give each other crap about just anything, play pranks on each other, constantly making each other the butt of all jokes, its basically stand up comedy at work LOL... and, since i can't be at work with this cast on my foot, well, i still gotta give someone crap (i've been texting Brian, my co-worker all day haha, but its not the same LOL)

greg@Lockitup 04-15-2008 09:31 PM

I don't think I'd have the balls to run a stack like that.. lol..

Looks fawkin tough as hell though!

holy cow that is awesome!!!

MikeyR 04-16-2008 05:49 PM

when you open the hood do you have to take the stack off.

BigGreenMonster 04-16-2008 06:58 PM

that sight in the rear view mirrior is the deffinition of intimidation to a honda! that is SICK! :choochoo:

Dr. Evil 04-16-2008 08:00 PM

And I get told Im a Redneck for wanting a single stack in the bed....lol

Refer to post #19 for open hood illustrations. The "up-pipe" is 4", the hood stack is 5", its attached to the hood with a flange, it just closes down over top of the up-pipe with about 2" overlap. They don't actually touch and seal off, but it doesn't need to either.

I seriously hate that flap. But its kind of a neccessity i guess. Well its better than getting out and putting a cap on it every time i shut it off... but now i can't miter cut it.. arggh!!! :argh:

GRI 04-17-2008 08:14 AM

they make caps that go on mitre cut stacks

just do a straight cut about 12-14" above the hood. Any more gets annoying. AND YOU NEED TO KEEP THE FLAPPER!!!!!!!!! Forgot to put mine on one nice and painted my truck black with soot! mines a bit different but its gonna be sweet driving down to bowling Green with 2 trucks with hood stacks! I love mine and doubt Ill change it. And mine is a lot quieter than my 5" stack!

if you do mitre it, cut it tword the passenger side! if you do it tword the cab it will driect all the noise straight back tword you......and thats realy annoying!

Moight as well throw a few pics of mine up!

BigBlue12V 04-19-2008 12:52 AM

I'm keepin the flapper for practicality and with my sweet new bumper (will start another thread for that, so look for it!) it looks alot better... JMHO... but why only 12-14" tall? Mine so far is fine i thought about choppin it down a couple inches. i don't even know how tall it is right now, i chopped the turn out off (i'd already cut the rest of the stack off to use for tips on a truck i used to have) and just put the rest of the pipe up there, figured i can always cut it down once i get a feel for where i want it. Yours almost seems a little on the short side. but i don't know... don't see enough hood stacks close up enough to know what looks "right".... also, what did you end up doing with your air filter, i read on one of your posts where you had it by your bellhousing LOL...

Bosshawg600 04-20-2008 12:55 PM

Ya My air filter is down by the transmission (Hate it being there) By I stoped by the local Advance auto parts and bought a cheap APC air filter that I can just slip onto the turbo, but not sure how well that is going to work. Im still trying to figure something out.

We can compare this weekend on height to see what looks good. Mine came pre-cut this lenth so it all i can work with. I think the picture doesnt do it any justice on how it realy looks and kinda makes it look shorter than it realy is.

06Cummins 04-20-2008 09:33 PM

That looks sweet. Took some serious scrote to slap a hood stack on a daily.

GRI 04-20-2008 11:00 PM

I'll see if I can find where I saw them. i believe Sharxram has them on his truck

haha i love when people say that! lol.....

boss, i've heard thats a very bad idea even on a stocky (cheap cone filters) and even worse on a hopped up truck, i've heard of the turbos sucking the filter apart/into the turbo!!! too cheap not strong enough and maybe not enough surface area. i've heard thats a big big no no!!!

Thanks GRI that'd be great!
