Without the assistance of electricity
Gentlemen,
I have a question for all you hard-core diesel mechanics. I am wondering what is the latest model of Ford, Dodge, and Chevy diesel truck could function without the assistance of electricity. My experience is extremely limited, however I understand (correctly I hope), that a 1993 Ford with an IDI International, coupled with a mechanical fuel pump and rear pump in tranny to support a roll-start, could work IF augmented by a choke to kill the engine. I would like to bounce this info, as well as gain knowledge of the Dodge and Chevy. Also, another issue....what major modifications would need to be done to a newer model diesel to, once again, operate without electricity. Thanks in advance. . |
the 89-93 model Cummins VE pumped truck only need 12volt for the fuel shutoff valve to function
the 94-98 mechanical P-7100 pumped Cummis as well without electricity any other Cummins wont run |
i didnt have a fuel shutoff solenoid on my 96 dodge and it lost the alternator on the way back from kansas and i still drove it on home to texas.

I know on my truck, as long as you have the fuel shut-off on a cable and not the solenoid, you can run without electricity. This runs true all the way up to early 98 for Dodges (12v), and early 94 for Fords (IDI's), but I'm not sure where you draw the line on GM's.

a 93 6.5 should still do it, I haven't seen anyone running a choke cable for the cutoff, but i'd imagine its possible.

yeah i meant specifically on a 6.5. I used one on the cummins for awhile, but was ghetto overall and not safe enough for my taste.

93 6.5 has electric fuel pump so it would kill the inj pump sooner or later.

I reckon you could still switch back to a mech fuel pump on the 93 6.5, or did they change the block casting/ not machine it?
