Stopping Diesel Thieves

Ok so it hasnt happened to me yet, but I have come up with a solution to the theft of fuel from trucks and cars alike. I plan on putting cross bolts into my fill pipe far enough down that it wont affect the fill nozzle, so that they cant get a siphon hose down the pipe. I am gonna try it tonight on my truck and if all goes well and I can get them to seal I will put some in the fiance's blazer soon as well. I think "the right stuff" sealant is rated for diesel so we will find out for sure, cause I like to fill it all the way up to the neck when I have the $ to do so. It'll also keep the DOT from dipping you for red and I'm pretty sure they cant say anything about it. Simple, cheap, effective. Thats my goal here!!!

I know my 92 had a ball check valve about half way down the fill neck that stopped me from getting a hose down in there.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Oh yea, and if they want it bad enough with your big jacked up pickemup (j/k) then they would drill a hole in the bottom of your tank and get it that way.

I believe thats called the Anti Rollover valve and I think all the trucks should have it.

Nitelord 07-16-2008 02:55 PM

DOT checkpoints...

My uncle was caught in a check point on a trip to the Farm Show in Harrisburg. They didn't dip the tank, they checked it at the fuel filter.:ouch:

jdugie123 07-16-2008 03:18 PM

ya if they can't dip you tank then they will just look at the fuel filter i have heard of them cutting them open to check

slowtowpig 07-16-2008 04:09 PM

they can also swab your tip.

get rid of the ball in our 1st gen trucks and you can fill the tank in about 1/4 of the time it normally takes.....

That wouldn't stop me if I was going to steal your fuel!

-I have a cordless drill with a 2'in hole saw.
-You have a plastic fuel tank which makes it that much easier!

I just stole your fuel in a couple of minutes and you didn't even hear a word or knew what hit ya!

ccmckee 07-16-2008 11:08 PM

Yup they are just punching the tanks with screwdivers or what ever and putting a pail underneath. All trucks should have the rollover ball from the factory.

carmelo-manic-mechanic@ho 07-17-2008 02:08 AM

i find if they want it bad enough they'll get it no mater what.

i just turned the sensitivity to the max and added a shock sensor real close to the tank along with a loud ass siren. that way they may get some fuel but they leave hurtin in the ears. and it is hard to be discreet when you can't hear yourself think.

toy4xchris 07-17-2008 02:47 AM

man first it was cats now its fuel. trust me if i catch someone punching a hole in my tank they wont be alive long enough to tell anyone what happened.:DD: whats wrong with ppl these days straight up lack of common respect.

97cummins 07-17-2008 03:58 AM

I second that!

And not enough discipline!
Only death can stop a thief. If they want it bad enough, they will take it.

rubberfish 11-10-2008 10:25 AM

Be awfully tough to steal the fuel from my truck. :)
It's parked behind the fence and the two dogs would love a game
of tug-a-war with your legs while you're under my truck. :D

midnite><og 11-10-2008 03:35 PM

smart idea my man. also alocking gas cap couldnt hurt...

RAMNYOU 11-10-2008 07:36 PM

My truck is spoiled it sleeps in the garage. I also live in a rural area & most people are scared of us country folks... they know we have guns & WILL shoot!

Stumblefoot 12-26-2008 03:12 PM

I want a diagram and write up of the alarm system. At home the truck is protected by 2 big Bullmasiffs, and Smith & Wesson security system. But what about the parking lots, or when I'm on a multi nite run, have to park way in the back of the motel with a 38' gooseneck. That's when I need better electronic protection.

Whit 12-26-2008 05:17 PM

Damn this stuff scares me.........I should prolly start locking my garage

I tell everyone if they get in a jam just go ahead and use my garage.........I have come home a few times to find people in there workin on a broke rig

Begle1 12-28-2008 11:07 AM

I've never understood all the stories about people syphoning gas out through the filler neck either, due to the roll-over valve being such a good deterrent to syphon lines. If you got violent with a stick down there I guess you could knock the ball out... But I don't think anybody who's ever actually tried to syphon fuel out of the filler neck would bother with buying a locking gas cap.

opusd2 01-17-2009 12:56 AM

I've been a firm believer in locking gas caps ever since high school in the 80's. In college I had someone break the metal locking gas cap apart on my 73 Ford F100 4x4 but never got in. I guess they weren't that hurting for fuel, then again it was only 75 cents a gallon back then. I should stop talking, I am aging myself...

But I do have the locking gas cap everywhere, and trust me when I say just about everything is not that hard to siphon. I have a cousin that slept in the crowbar motel for a while because of that. And because of him, we got very creative on the farm - even to the point of putting locks on our old Farmall tractors. Since he didn't run diesel, our Internationals were fine. But when we caught him trying, there was some "learning" involved on his part.

I guess the rumors of us rural farm folk are right, we can be a bit scary. We also protect our belongings with various thundersticks. I like my 44 mag. There is also the visual deterrance factor there when someone stops by and I am carrying that stainless beauty on my waist.

So even though we don't have everything garaged, good luck to the thieves. If they are lucky, the dogs will get them first.:moon:

Here in Germany, those scumbags of thieves drill a hole in the bottom of the tank and plug it with a screw afterwards. Sometimes they came several times to the same car. For that reason I mounted a thick skid plate below and around the tank.

02_duramax 02-18-2009 08:50 PM

wow

ive been sitting here reading this whole thing and was wondering why theives are so stupid? trust me im no theif and my truck got broken into last weekend and i was pissed but anyway while i was reading if i wanted to steal fuel i would do it to where i could do it more than once. but with that being said id love to catch someone trying to steal forom me again.

thats what i was thinking about doint just amking a real thick skid plate probably be a little harder that way

codys 03-03-2009 11:42 AM

hmmmmm i think i got enough 1/4 inch stainless to enclose my tank from the bottom and sides plus my tank is metal so that helps:U:

K50 03-03-2009 12:13 PM

Man, last year out in the field, we had our compressor hauling rig parked on an empty lot. The truck had a full tank of about 40 gallons, and the saddle tank had about 250L in it....the :edit: guy stole every last drop out of both tanks and even took the cap from the saddle tank... I couldn't believe it, they took over $100 in fuel from us. I didn't realise it until I saw a big puddle under the tank and asked who didn't clean up and made such a mess, when I realised it wasn't any of our crew, the truck suddenly died. We spent the next 60 minutes priming an '82 Mack and driving the pickup to town to get more fuel. Such a waste. :ouch:

1/4" stainless... be careful, they might try to steal the stainless plate instead. :ok1:

gone ropin 03-06-2009 12:13 AM

got me a month ago, 35 gallons iin main tank, they bypassed the locking cap and removed the filler hose and got it there, then they removed the pump on the 110 gallon tank in the bed and drained it as well, :madd: madd as a wet hen at this point, knew who it was but cops couldnt do anything, 2 weeks ago they drilled holes in the main tank, got that fixed, bad thing was they stole my gas cans each time, they hit again but this time had main tank laced with sugar and acetone, and and enoufgh red dye to look good, hey guess what the punks diesel down the road DIED last weekend, :5: now i can put in my new fuel tank, and not worry about thieves, oh and his dad and i had a long discussion about if i ever cought his boys butt on my property for any reason, both of their butts would need the medical chopper,

stkdram55 03-06-2009 12:37 AM

:ouch: id be whippin some ass if i knew who it was

97cummins 03-07-2009 04:05 AM

I'd be shovin my boot up their backside.:madd:

Deezel Stink3r 03-10-2009 10:07 AM

They had stolen my gas cans two years ago too.
I ordered two lockable gas can carriers. Same model the military uses for their purposes.
No theft since then, but they tried to steal the gas cans. They tried to cut the locks with a bolt cutter...

Hahaha, -military stuff is well fabricated.:howdy:
Added a switch in the gas filler lid additionally to the car alarm. So at least it makes noise, before they start to destroy something, It was cheap: 1,20,-€ for the switch and a hour work to wire it correctly.

selfservices 03-12-2009 06:19 PM

The auto parts store used to sell a coiled steel spring that would slide down the fill pipe to make it hard to put a tube down. I have not seen them lately.

PERHAPS I SHOULD MOVE THERE?

joey 02-04-2010 11:45 AM

I cant stand people that steal I dont suport stealing anything in anyway because stealing isnt right.

5.9Bronco...eventually 02-04-2010 02:52 PM

Man I am glad I live in a small town. If someone was dumb enough to steal my fuel they really are retards because the keys are usually in the ignition pretty much everywhere I go. Most people know me well enough to know I aint violent, but you :edit: with someones vehicle or hit a girl. God forbid I get a hold of you! I dont own a gun yet but it is on the to do list soon, but I prefer to take my anger out with an old fashioned beatin.

I hate thieves. People have told me thieves are people too. Bullshit unless they are stealing to provide for their family, there is no reasonable theft. But then again I am a firm believer of helping most people in need. So if they need, it they just need to ask. What happened to helping out others and your neighbors? Maybe I am just old fashioned, but I wish there were more people around with the same beliefs, that are my age and any age for that matter. Kids these days, including my age, early 20s, dont have any manners or beliefs that were taught to them.

No kiddin'. I'm more worried about somebody putting something "in" there that don't belong than siphoning fuel "out."

If you ever actually removed one of those suckers you'd know that ain't happenin'. You'd be gettin' violent using more than a stick with the fill tube in a vise on your workbench.

I do like the armored tank idea, but a bit impractical, methinks....

DieselDanBoy 02-05-2010 08:05 AM

where i work we had a 00' powerstroke, 44 gallon tank, someone layed underneath the thing one night and cut the pan that holds the tank out, they had a battery powered sawzall and cut all the hoses, they stole the whole tank ouf of the truck :argh:
