an ideas ?thanks.i saw 2 diesel merc.for $800 complete cars not ran in years mid 60swhat about this for doner?1 is auto &1 standard shift. same motor i think. last driven 5 years ago.what to look for?when trying to buy?

K80 02-24-2011 12:59 PM

A Duramax would be awesome in your rig. :w2:

EasternAggie 02-24-2011 09:21 PM

Agreed a Dmax would be awesome, but would require a lot of work.

How big of an engine are you lookin for? Like a 5.9 Cummins or Dmax or like a Mercedes diesel?

dhw1946 02-25-2011 06:09 PM

a merc

i think i want to put in a engine that will fit the space.a 5 cly inline or a 4?:argh::argh:

BriteWhiteRam 02-26-2011 11:20 AM

4bt cummins :tu:

EasternAggie 02-26-2011 01:55 PM

A 4BT Cummins would be the most common swap to do. I know Isuzu also makes a diesel comparable in size to the 4BT, saw one swapped into an old F100.

Or maybe a 4-53 Detroit? :humm: Not gonna be real powerful but it would be cool :tu:

BriteWhiteRam 02-27-2011 09:34 AM

thats why i said 4bt, they can still make 400hp and be reliable, and they're gona move a big truck a lot easier with lower RPM then a detroit, or a small izuzu

Whatever engine you choose, let us know, sounds like a cool project:c:

EasternAggie 02-27-2011 01:57 PM

Idk that Isuzu looks pretty bad to the bone, but I dont think they're as common as 4BT's. the 4BT would get my vote. But check this out :c:

I believe its a 3.9L Isuzu diesel. He's running twin turbos, and if you watch the boost gauge, even with a leaking head gasket, it hits 60psi like nothing. Speed doesnt jump up much, but he say the trans is shot, he only has 1st and 2nd gear, and the converter slips with anything over 25% throttle. Bad little truck :rocking:

i need to know more about 4bt,what does this mean?:humm:

dieseldude03 02-28-2011 08:14 AM

I'm working on the exact same truck. Or at least I will when the stupid title fiasco is done! I'll be using a 354-6 Perkins in mine, just because it was available and FREE.:jump:

Check it out here if you want: https://www.dieselbombers.com/diesel...0-perkins.html

Just like the 5.9 inline 6 Cummins is the 6bt, so the 3.9 inline 4 cummins is the 4bt. Basically its a 5.9 with two less cylinders. The mechanical ones came with either a VE rotary pump like the 1st gen 12v's or an inline P-pump like the 2nd gen 12v's. I think many common applications for the 4bt were bread trucks and such.

My uncle has a 4 cyl Detroit, I think it's a 4-71(?) turbo+supercharger. I have always thought it would be bad ass in an old ton and a half or two ton. Just something a little different....

The Isuzu's can make every bit as much power as the 4bt and be as much if not greater at reliability. Plus the Isuzu is a sleeved engine making easier to rebuild.

Those are cool old engines. You can pull some pretty good RPM's with them being 2-cycle(!), they sound really cool straight-piped.:c:

My goal is to get a 6v53 into something, Ive seen them swapped into both a mid 80's chevy one ton and an 80's Dodge Powerwagon.

I have never heard the 4 cyl run, but there is a 16-71 in an old wheel loader around here that sounds insane!

You might get a kick out of this.

I love the sound of those old Supercharged 2 strokers. They were way ahead of their time in some aspects.

pukie370 02-28-2011 03:58 PM

my freind has a 4-71 det in a 78 f250 4x4. It has big injectors, is turbo and blown, with a military 5 speed, not the fastest truck but you cant slow it down. If you like noise this truck is bad, It makes semi trucks sound quiet. It will shake your fillings out and ear plugs are recomended. The true diesel!

Any idea what kind of power he is making with the 4-71? I briefly tried to find ratings for a stock engine, but I don't know if it was for the turboed version. Stock 4cyl looked like 121 which isn't too shabby for something that old. Worked for a farmer once who had a couple potato trucks with one of the six cylinder detroits in them. They were a blast to drive. Keep them wound up and shift as fast as you can! Loved em!

pukie370 02-28-2011 06:15 PM

det 4-71

I have no idea, but he can out pull my 2001 cummins HO with edge box and exaust in the mountains with a 12k trailer, but when i hit the opean road i smoke him. if i had to guess he has around 250hp and to much torque to measure. when he lets of the gas at 45 mph the tires skid from the compresion and then when he puts the pedal down the tires spin no turbo lag at all, but like you said you shift like you have a purpouse in life.i think that motor only has a very small rpm curve.

dhw1946 02-28-2011 07:42 PM

thanks sound like what i need .i am looking hard!

i love it this is a beast!:jump:thanks

@HORNS; finally watched that video....... thats very cool. plus he has the compressor for his airbags built in!

Dang that dudes made some progress since I last seen that truck. I believe it has a 453 in it.

This is almost exactly what I want, except with a standard.

You better invest in good earplugs if you want to drive a truck like that for very long....:tttt:

dhw1946 03-01-2011 07:24 PM

ear plugs

yes it was loud!was that a v8 diesel?

no it was a v6. The ol two stroke detroits are easy to tell. Since it has a 6v53, it is a V6 configuration with each cylinder displacing 53 cubes, so its a 318 or so.

In the same way, an 8v92 detroit is a V8 with each cylinder displacing 92 cubes. If there is no "V" in the name, it is an inline configuration. so a 6-71 detroit would be an inline 6 with each cylinder displacing 71 cubes.

Quick rundown of old detroits :tu:

pukie370 03-02-2011 12:45 AM

I love the sound of the detroits. Even if i need earplugs.

i want to put this diesel in my 1946 2 ton chev truck. the diesel is automatic , i bought the car drove it home 65miles runs good but takes a minute to get up to 65 mph.i want to c what you think and advise?the46 truck is a inline 216 cu inch orig. engine i got it to crank but want diesel.thanks h: in ga. :humm:

EasternAggie 03-09-2011 02:13 AM

Yeah should work, I dont know much about them, but there are a few guys on this site that do :tu:

dieseldude03 03-09-2011 07:17 AM

Thing you have to remember is the rear axle in your '46 has 6.17 gearing (8:1 low if it's a 2-speed rear) and the trucks only weigh about 5100 lbs! It doesn't take much power to get these things moving. The original 216 had Maximum Brake Horsepower of 90 and a rated horsepower of a whopping 29.4! That Mercedes will do fine. You can find a lot of info one these trucks at Brad's '41-'46 Chevys
