Going To Need A Sunfire Forum Here..

Things are all ready starting , and ive got questions....like why does the tensoner belt make a mean belt skweeling sound when the motor is hot....and the starters not engaging right way...just started, well i only had it for like 10 hours max and it did it....:humm:.

95 sunfire.. 2.2L.. motors in sideways,, tensoner belt isnt going to be easy to get at..everything is so compact........[!---]#] <<<pic of moter
It feels like im at one with the pavement its so low.....can i put a lift kit in it..lol
I like to be higher..:w2:

Sounds like the flex plate has a bad spot. IE the teeth are wore enough to where the drive has a hard time engaging. For the other problem, a new belt and tensioner.

dmaxjenn 07-01-2008 01:27 PM

Im going to replace the roters in the brakes, that will stop the vibration on the front end.. have a new belt, nothing is worn, so it doesnt look outta line, just vibrates, and the IE teeth..?? is that for thet starting problem? im going to get a book on it, so i can understand the fuel injection better.. :humm:

Johnny Cetane 07-01-2008 01:36 PM

It wouldn't surprise me if the starter drive is going. The starter turns but the gear isn't getting pushed out into the nose to contact the flex wheel. I've replaced a lot of starters of this vintage for that problem. It's either this or what wildbill said. You should pray that I'm right.

You should grab the tensioner and see if there's a lot of play in it. If you can move it around by hand then it's shot. You may also have the tensioner pulley bearing going south on you. Take the belt off and wiggle the pulley to see if it's loose and then spin it by hand to see if it sounds funky.

k the starter is turning over so i dont think its that which sounds easier to replace then the flex wheel, thats on the tranny right, which means the motor comes out to get to the tranny.:humm:
priced out brake pads, rotors, claipers and brake line hoses, around 200.00.

One way to tell if it is the drive. If the starter turns the engine over, then quits but the starter keeps turning. If it's the flexplate, it will make a horrific grinding noise. And yes you have to pull the engine.

ok theres no grinding noise, yet!! the starter doesnt keep turning, just takes like 30 secs before it engages.. Im going to post pics, the engine is filthy( im so embarassed) but i will be cleaning it right away, every thing i touch in there i just get black. Gross!!..I waxed it, and did the carpets and seats last night though the out side and interior are really clean:U:

The starter is still grinding my gears. Does it click before it engages? Like you have to turn the key to start a bunch of times and all it wants to do is click before it engages? If so, there is a plastic cap on the end of the solenoid that houses all the contacts. One of em is worn. You can flip the contacts, but since you have to drop the starter anyway, might as well replace the whole thing.

nope no clicking .:humm: and the belt is tight...nothing moves. nothing frayed, or shredded, or shinny. thats all good, but there is a spare in the trunk.
It hasnt made that noise today . I guess it never got hot enough? Power steering pump, was another suggestion on the noise.

OK, woman, now you're confusing the hell outta me.

Are you saying that it cranks but doesn't fire? And that you have to give it some gas pedal to get it to start?

If that's the case then it's either your Fuel Pressure Regulator or your fuel pump.

Typically with a GM that has a leaking FPR it will start hard after the car has been driven and then shut off for anywhere from 1/2 hour to 5 hours.

A weak fuel pump will typically not start when the car hasn't been started yet for the day.

Look at the picture below and see the part I circled. That's your FPR. Pull that little rubber hose off the top right away after you get home from a drive and see if there is gas coming out of it. If there isn't put a paper towel around it and walk away for about an hour and the check it.

If there's gas then that's your problem. The rubber diaphragm is leaking and flooding the car a bit as well as bleeding off fuel pressure.

If you don't get any gas out of there then have someone put a fuel pressure gauge on it when the car sits overnight. I'd bet it's the pump then. I'll try and get you the fuel press specs here today yet.

ok johnny, i smelt gas last night, ill start it and let it idle for a bit and take off that hose and look for leaks...I had it checked out last night by a friend, he said deffinatly the rotors, and calipers need to be done, bad vibration when braking, the belt he sid was loose, he could grab it and pinch it together, smelt the gas but it was getting too dark to see inside. The head light lamp was blinking on , looks like turn signal, one of the light wents dim, then he knocked it and it went bright, but the light stayed on...ummm i think thats it.. Ill get my coveralls on and get it up on a ramp,so i can see whats up under there..first thing ill go check that hose.

I cleaned it up a bit, whats a good engine cleaner, any names off the top of your heads? ill get some, yuck. 1st. im missing a bolt on the top of the valve cover.the middle one should be able to see that in the pic. 2nd, the fan doesnt turn at all when its running..isnt it suppose too? 3rd. I dropped a splatter of grease on the exhaust manifold and it smoked like crasy,, got super hot really quick....air filter is black, going to get a new one soon..:humm:I took off the hose and it wasnt leaking, but ill try again later when i drive it longer..oh yea the gas tank light went on last night and never went off after i filled up.. this morning its off...this cars going to need lots of work..yikes..:argh:

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

got engine cleaner and new filter, how come brake calipers are 75.00 at lordco and 53 at CT? 40 doller core charge at lordco and 25 at CT?:humm: still started like crap when i drove it for awhile, the fuelpump is right below that fpr isnt it..

wildbill 07-02-2008 03:32 PM

Probably going to need new spark plugs, wires, an O2 sensor, and fuel filter. Some vehicles, the light or gauge won't do anything while the key is switched on. When you shut it off, everything reset.

dmaxjenn 07-02-2008 03:36 PM

yea, oil is clean was just done.imagine the fuel filter was too.... see how that cleaner works, clean er up take it to my new friend, 20 yr old little hotty.. ill just sit back and watch his A$$..:pca1::w2:

Yo pump is in yo tank. Fuel pressure specs are 41 to 47 psi. That's key on/engine off. Idle specs are allowed to be about 5 psi lower.

dmaxjenn 07-03-2008 09:40 AM

Ok Johnny noted thanks for the research, ill get on that this weekend.Pumps in the tank,,dam, the tank has to come off then? :humm:

Johnny Cetane 07-03-2008 09:55 AM

Yeah. I've only done them on a hoist but I had can have them out in about 15 minutes so their not too bad. Just wait until you're low on gas before you do it. :U:
