One thing I've learned About Grid Heaters...
 

When it is 28* out side it SUCKS not having them! :D

Started up the 89 Cummins and boy is it rough when that cold out and no grid heaters. LOTS of smoke and it barley wants to run for a min or two. :D

Ha yea I bet! lol Get a vid of that next time! :pca1: And btw its even rough with the grid heater up here sometimes like when my ol 2000 Cummins use to get to sit for 10 hours at work when its -15 outside without the wind chill.... Lotsa smoke and 3 cylinders only.... :argh:

if the grid is removed or unplugged I dont see why a quick shot of starting fluid wouldnt help the starting issue. If your grid is or might be working do NOT use starting fluid ! :bat:

I run my truck without one all winter.
White smoke when it starts, then clears
up.

cold starts dont bother me one bit, sure it smoke for a while but that is just part of owning a diesel, make coffee go out start it, crank the heater, co back in the house get my coffee by the time i get back out to the truck its warm enouph to drive her

I kinda liked my 91 that was grid heaterless...it sounded pretty b.a. for the first few minutes.

grid heaterless is one thing, but a shot of ether is another, im totally against ether when comes to diesels, my buddies 96 12v is all "addicted" to ether and has to have it every morning... even in spring and fall when it aint that cold:argh:

Blew his compression rings out more'n likely. We call those "ether babies". For the record starting in the cold isn't so bad if you have a "properly valved" engine :lol: :tttt: It was about 18* out this morning and I didn't allow the grid heater to run(I woke up 1 min. before I had to be at work. I live 7 miles away) might have taken a crank more than usual but it only puffed white for about 10 seconds before it cleared up.


Try doing that with a powerstroke or duramax.

FYI Dmax's start just fine not waiting for the heater or glow plugs in the cold. And if you where to wait it only take seconds even at 18* for my truck. I think the 3 cyl mode on cummins is sweet.
