What year model was the best diesiel engine?

Hey all,
Looking to buy a used Ford F350 between 2001-2007. What was the best year model engine that had the least problems?

My ideal vehicle is: F350, Crew Cab (or super cab), HD, superduty turbo, 4x4, Long bed

Thanks for your help, ED

2001, 2002, or first part of year 2003.

Are you going to pull, mod it, are you going to work on yourself:humm:

sujumptd 08-05-2012 11:21 AM

Yes on all, pull (boat), mod (more power), work on it myself too.

2007 6.0 would be my choice...

6.0 gets a bad rap, but its a great little motor that loves a little more power with just a few mods.

sujumptd 08-06-2012 05:46 PM

Well, I'm looking at a 2007 3500HD LT model with the 6.6 LBZ engine (172000) miles. Looks like a pretty good deal. $17,250. Might get this one. Thoughts?

Other then its government motors?

I bleed ford so I cant help you much with a chevy. LOL

articfox 08-06-2012 09:55 PM

honestly go ford my buddy ran all chevys they all had problems. 07s are good i love my 2001 7.3 they are nearly bullet proof 262k miles on the motor no problems my dad has a 07 he loves his go ford ive seen alot of problems with chevys but that's just personal experience may be different to other people

If it was me I would go with the 7.3, cause I found, with the newer engines all the emissions CRAP, when somethin goes wrong you'd pay rediculous amount of money to fix it. Now the 6.7's seem to be fine, but me if I was in ur shoes I'd go with the 7.3, I would also if I was pullin stuff I would get a stick shift for hills and heavy loads. Thats just me. :)

articfox 08-07-2012 08:55 AM

^ yeah forgot to say that with my other post all that epa stuff is a pain to deal with, not sure on how well the upgrades are for them either because i know you have to keep within epa standards may be wrong on that but go with the 7.3 they are bullet proof and great for hauling i pull equipment all the time in nc where its 100+ deg and very hilly and my 7.3 works great couldn't be happier

sujumptd 08-07-2012 10:18 AM

Okay, I've also found a 2002 F350 crew cab 7.3 4x4 with 240,000 miles. What are your thoughts on this one?

Mdub707 08-07-2012 10:25 AM

The LBZ is the least problematic of the duramaxes in my opinion, from an engine stand point. Any power adders and you can plan on building a trans. Also if you tow or offorad at all, the IFS front end sucks. I would be in an LBZ right now if they came with a straight front axle.

Depending on what you want to do either can be a good choice. The 7.3 is a reliable engine, but don't let people fool you into thinking they don't have their own issues.

The 6.0 has issues too, but they can be fixed. The 6.0 will respond to mods much better and be easier to get power out of for less money, even if you factor in doing headstuds. 7.3's are just an old platform.

Engines aside, the 05-07 superduties are light years ahead of the earlier trucks. Interior is nicer, better creature comforts, coil sprung front end for better turning and ride, heavier front axle, etc... lots of nice things.

sujumptd 08-07-2012 11:27 AM

Okay,
I really like the 2007 Duramax LBZ but the 2002 F350 has much more room in the back crew cab which is what I was looking for. Don't want to shoot myself in the foot by making a choice on which has more room on the back. I'm not going to do anything extreme with it, maybe mod it for more fuel mileage and power, pull my 22 foot boat down to the coast from Austin, TX and maybe some over the road travel or light 4x4 off road. I'm kinda leaning to the 2002 F350 side. Am I making a mistake? Keep in mind, I've never owned a Diesel truck although I'm very good at auto mechanics and repair with gas engines. What to do, What to do??:scare2:

Mdub707 08-07-2012 01:09 PM

As long as it's a good deal. People seem to want an arm and a leg for a high mileage rusted out 7.3 these days.

tiremann9669 08-07-2012 08:40 PM

Texas trucks don't rust :humm:

articfox 08-09-2012 09:58 PM

go with what you really want as long as the durmaxx drives well the tranny is good didnt mean to scare u about the durmax's they arent a bad truck for what your doing. i know a guy who has a durmax that pulls a 30fter boat never has a problem. my buddy on the other hand over pulled with his. both trucks are good 7.3s from my experience are easy to work on. im guessing durmaxes are the same honestly go with what you feel most comfortable with. both of them sound like they will work. and about the millage on the ford i got 260k miles on my motor and its still pulling like a champ no problems

sujumptd 08-10-2012 11:07 AM

Thanks for all the info.
I went with the 2002 F350 7.3 Crew 4x4. Looks like a good truck and motor. Hope nothing explodes in the next month or two. LOL:hellox:
