7.3 shutting off

Was in a drive through this morning and when I went to pull up my truck just died and said check engine soon. I cut the key off and waited about five minutes then fired right up. What's going on?

You need to pull codes from the PCM. Unfortunately most of our long distance x-ray vision is not so good and my crystal ball is broken. More information is needed to be of any help.

It has a ts6pos chip in it. I'm wondering if that's doing it?

Check the codes...

Could be nothing, could be a CPS, could be an IPR... could be one of about 200 items, but if there is a SES light, then there is a code stored.

The "service engine soon" light will come on when the engine dies and the key is in the 'ON' position.

Is the light staying on after the restart or did it go away?

If it went out upon restart my 99% bet is the CPS (cam position sensor) but that's strictly an educated guess.

If it is still on after restarting, then check the trouble codes.

PS....if you waited in a drive thru line for 5 minutes either you have really patient fellow citizens or a very busy/very dead drive thru..

lol I'd bet on the cam sensor. A spare with a 10mm wrench in the glove box should have been standard equipment in 7.3 trucks.

lol exactly, least its better than a 6.0.... you cant fit the standard stuff you need in that glove box, you'd need the whole bed of the truck HAHA, EGR cooler, injectors, head gaskets, etc.. etc..

but like said above, change out your CPS, pretty easy to do, and your truck should be fine, after you install it, clear the codes and drive around for a little while to see if any other codes come up :tu:

mine gave me fits back in the summer and it was the filters in the tank, cleaned them and never shut down again.
