Fuel leak I think?

It started with a small amount and I thought it was oil but my girlfriend said it's fuel because I can't smell because I'm sick, it grew last night to a substantial amount so I think it's fuel, but its puddle up right below oil pan plug. :argh::humm:

Thanks in advance
Adam

Do we really trust the GF's assessment? LOL, just kidding...

Have you looked in the valley to see if it's leaking down the back of the motor?

1999stroker 10-23-2011 08:31 PM

Well yes and no She knows what diesel smells like other than that no:argh:. I didn't look I'm working midnight shift right now I will tommirow but its so hard for me to tell with everything there.I will tomorrow. :tu:

I don't see Any fuel in the valley puddled it's wet though and I smell fuel in the engine compartment.

95powersmoker 10-23-2011 08:40 PM

Take a look when it's light out or get a flashlight. You might have a fuel leak in the valley and it's running down the back of the motor and dropping on the ground...

1999stroker 10-23-2011 08:47 PM

If it's running down the vally erred it possibly leaking from?

sparkiewalt 10-23-2011 09:08 PM

I have had this happen twice, they both poured into my engine valley, (the drain line had come loose from the fuel valve) I had 2 separate leaks in this area, 1 was from the fuel filter drain valve, it started leaking fuel, (ruined my release bearing:jump:) the second came from a bolt/plug on the rear of the fuel filter assembly, I guess this is the high pressure oil pump, any way a flashlight while engine running should tell the story, look real good along the rear of the filter assembly, and put your hand down there, the bolt/plug is on the right side of the assembly standing if front of truck looking towards it. the first time it was spraying a very fine stream that was hardly noticeable, any way there is an oring on that bolt/plug that you will need to replace, the good news is it is a fairly easy repair. but get it done right away. and check your oil.

diesel-34 10-23-2011 09:23 PM

if its leakin from the valley I guarntee its the fuel filter bowl drain valve O rings...i had the same problem with my 7.3...dont go to ford theyll rip you off...go to smallparts.com and you can get 25 of the rings for like 5 bucks...if u got a 01 f350 7.3 I can give you the info on what size you need to do it yourself...takes bout 30 mins tops...id change the fuel filter as well cause you have to drain it anyways lol...hope that helps

1999stroker 10-23-2011 09:49 PM

Ok guys thanks I'll look at it either in the morning when I get off work or after I wake up wod a regular d parts store sell the o rings?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

I got a late 99 btw

Yep, they should have the orings you need.

sparkiewalt 10-24-2011 10:07 AM

I had trouble finding the correct orings for my oil bolt/plug..you may have to go to the dealer or order it. if you do go ahead and get 2 or 3

1999stroker 10-24-2011 07:07 PM

Well I looked into it today the only place I've come to it leaking from would be the fuel line going into the head.:argh:

fordornothing 10-24-2011 07:22 PM

did the line crack in the little strap that holds it in place?

1999stroker 10-24-2011 07:36 PM

I don't know I couldn't see it leakig when started but it looks the wetest and hasn't leaked today from what I can tell

Peterbilt387X 10-24-2011 10:12 PM

check the simple thing first....make sure ur fuel filter cap is seated correctly. i had the o-ring backwards (yes, laugh all you want lol). if not, dieselorings has full rebuild kits for the fuel bowl and all the hoses. viton o-rings.

1999stroker 10-24-2011 11:00 PM

Ok.where's the fuel bowl located at? It's dry to on filter assembly and drain bolt for that.

gradyc 10-25-2011 03:22 AM

My boss's 02 just had a leak in the valley and it turned out to be the line leading from the filter housing to the rear of the right head. The bracket that holds it in place had rubbed a hole in it. I silver soldered it for now but am ordering a replacement tor it.

flathead jack 10-25-2011 09:51 AM

fuel line on passenger side where it goes thru hold down strap on head will wear a hole in it i posted step by step instructions. how to replace line cost 45.00 from ford took this old man 3hrs put a thick pad over radiator youll be there for a while

sparkiewalt 10-25-2011 10:55 AM

the pad on the radiator is a must...

flathead jack 10-26-2011 10:52 AM

check passenger side fuel line from filter to back of head where it goes thru clamp bolted to head. if thats it i posted step by step inst just scroll down to fuel line replace line is 45,00 at dealer when i went in i showed him part number he glanced at a went and got it said common problem

jamsmith 10-29-2011 02:29 PM

takes a 9/16 short wrench. yea, lots of pad over radiator. just changed mine 3 days ago.

its right behind the plastic Powerstroke cover. its a big round plastic thing with a yellow handle coming out on the back side. cant miss it. and be sure if you havent allready and drain the water in the fuel before you go taring in to it.

1999stroker 11-01-2011 06:42 PM

I took it in to mechanic seeing as how I'm working 2 doubles this week, he said something like water actuator wastegaye or something on the fuel bowl. How do you drain the water from fuel.

Mystery fuel Leak

Got to work this morning and stopped in the parking lot. Smelled diesel through the vents, Got out huge puddle underneath the fly wheel cover. Constant drip when I shut it off.
Found fuel in the valley and thought it might be fuel pump but found a metal tube connected to rubber line with 2 hose clamps headed down tword the valley and back. After parying that it could be that simple, pulled the hose clamps and cut a bit off. Re- installed metal tube in rubber one and clamped. Drove it after work drip seems to have stopped. The only thing I think was the residual fuel left in the valley from taking the hose apart. Will see tomorrow if this fixes it. Will Let you all know.
I hope this helps someone.

I do not see where you actually stopped the leak Conner, You only put the drain line back together. My valve was leaking through the ball valve part. I removed my valve and put some liquid steel in the valve to stop it from leaking, I use a shop vac to suck out the fuel/debris when I change my filter. just could not bring myself to pay $80 for a $10 plastic valve that will probably leak again soon. Ford has a bad habit of over pricing parts that are not available aftermarket.

gradyc 11-02-2011 01:58 PM

I replaced that valve on the boss' truck and got it from ford because we were in a hurry. after I got the old one off I realized that all you have to do is get new o-rings and replace them to stop the leak. O-rings are a lot cheaper than the overpriced valve.

But it's a lot easier & quicker to change the valve, than to take the valve a part to put in the O-rings:humm:

its right behind the plastic Powerstroke cover. its a big round plastic thing with a yellow handle coming out. the yellow handle moves too the left and will drain the water in the fuel. my guess is that you were not able to drain the water and it froze and cracked the chintz plastic valve. its really easy to replace and only has four bolts that take a little patients to get too. i would get the right part and fix it right. its not worth having your truck catch on fire over a 60$ part. :scare2:

1999stroker 11-04-2011 04:34 PM

That's what is was is the valve, 110 bucks for diagnose repair parts and labor and tax at my mechanic great guy since I haven't had time to do it.thanks everyone!:c:
