boost seems low to me???

so my boost seems low even on my extreme tune on my edge evo and the most ive seen is 17psi on the evo screen i know it reads off the maf sensor but it should be close right? and i do have the gr38.

CSIPSD 04-23-2011 09:59 AM

17 psi is very low... I would check your up pipes, check the wastegate to make sure its not loose. Check for boost leaks...

You have a 38R on there now? You should be seeing about 22-27psi on your stock or tow settings.

Ya it's on there now and this is a dumb question but wheres my waste gate? Lol
The rest I know and is there a way to pressure up the system to check the boots?

Yes, You can pressurize the system. Compressed air and something like this...http://www.dieselsite.com/index.asp?...ROD&ProdID=607

Wastegate is shown in the picture...

It's there another way to test for boost leaks maybe a getto at home way?

95powersmoker 04-23-2011 10:43 PM

You can build that pressure tester for cheaper...

shorty2tall 04-23-2011 10:57 PM

how? i work at home depot so im guessing i can get most while im at work tm

95powersmoker 04-23-2011 11:05 PM

Some PVC, PVC cap, a valve stem and some PVC glue... That would attach to the intake or straight onto the turbo and pressurize the system... If you don't hear the leaks, spray some soapy water on to it and you will see them. :c:

shorty2tall 04-23-2011 11:22 PM

what size pvc? 4in?

95powersmoker 04-23-2011 11:24 PM

Is your intake 4"?

shorty2tall 04-23-2011 11:35 PM

idk ill have to check and how do i attach it?

95powersmoker 04-23-2011 11:38 PM

I would just attach it using one of the boots. So whatever diameter the boot is, that's the size PVC you want. I used to have a picture but I just looked for it and I must have deleted it.

See my orange boot, I would attach it to that or go further and attach it to the intake boot. Whichever you want.

shorty2tall 04-23-2011 11:48 PM

ok thanks :tu:

Where's the best place to get to see if the up pipes are leaking
Oh and now the highest boost I see is 15 so whatever is getting worse is it normal for it to drop a psi before it shifts?

Just take a flash light from under the truck and look up toward the turbo. Or look back behind the turbo from above. If you see black soot, your up pipes are leaking.

Other then that check for boost leaks like James showed earlier.

Is your truck an automatic? It will drop a little during a shift but not much. If its a manual, You start back at square one every time you shift.

Ya it's an auto jw and got the stuff just got to put it together and check it tm.
Would it be easier to see up pipe leaks from under the truck or above?

Clark Kent 04-25-2011 01:18 AM

I'm in the same boat as you, just hooked up a boost gauge finally and found I'm only making 5-10psi. Picked up a manual gauge and confirmed it to be correct.

You can make a boost leak tester yourself with some Fernco Plumbing couplers, car tire valve stem, and a pvc endcap from a hardware store. I've done this plenty of times with my turbo cars. Just make sure to regulate the supply going in.

shorty2tall 04-25-2011 01:22 AM

boost seems low to me???

Ya for air going in I'm going to use a bicycle pump with gauge cuz I need one anyways ha getto I know but it should work if not got a friend with an air compressor

CSIPSD 04-25-2011 07:11 AM

You will never be able to make enough volume with a bike pump. Your going to have leaks past the valves, rings and such... Need a compressor.

shorty2tall 04-25-2011 12:02 PM

boost seems low to me???

Damn lol I'll do it at a friends then how much pressure? 20?

CSIPSD 04-25-2011 12:19 PM

20 psi should work fine.

shorty2tall 04-25-2011 01:17 PM

ok and i tire valve stem thing will work fine for air in?

Clark Kent 04-25-2011 06:41 PM

Yes, a tire valve stem.

Here's what I've made before.

I got some pics I'm going to be putting up.
Looks like it could have an up pipe leak but there's not that much black on the pipe.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

here a pic of the top of the up pipe on drivers side one of them ill take more pics tm.
I'm also going to wipe off the soot where it is on the pipes drive around a little and see if it comes back

here a pic of a motor thing jw what it is and its purpose. its on the passenger side between the battery and ac stuff. thanks!

CSIPSD 04-27-2011 12:49 PM

The motor you pictured is the Vacumm pump for the AC/Defrost vents and the hubs if you have shift on the fly.

The up pipes are leaking a bit, I doubt that is all your issue, but its a good start.

shorty2tall 04-27-2011 12:56 PM

Ok thank u and thank u! I will be looking at more and getting more pics tonight

shorty2tall 04-28-2011 12:40 AM

boost seems low to me???

I got the S&B on tonight so now boost is up to 18.5 so leak somewhere still could the waste gate just be set low?

shorty2tall 05-07-2011 09:46 PM

boost seems low to me???

Ok so I'm up to 18-19 psi now had a friend power break it and sprayed boots couldn't find anything boots seemed to get hard can't find any pipe leaks other then the one I post the pic of could it be the waste gate? If so how do I check that and fix it?

CSIPSD 05-07-2011 10:04 PM

Try unpluging the wastegate and see, but I doubt that is your issue. Need to fix the up pipes, your loosing some there.

shorty2tall 05-07-2011 10:13 PM

boost seems low to me???

Ok is there just a wire with a plug on the control? And how would I fix where that little leak is? And where do u think im losing boost?

Red hose that goes to the Wastegate rod, unplug it and plug it onto one of your IC clamp bolts.

ok ill do that tm after work and finally build the thing to look for leaks on the IC boots just to be sure.
how would i fix that little up pipe leak form the pic?

CSIPSD 05-07-2011 10:47 PM

Replace the gaskets that are in there... Its a bear of a job...

ok what all will have to be done to get them out? such as removing of things like turbo and what now
and is it the donut gaskets?
should i do oem one? how long does it take to do?

boost seems low to me???

What exactly should or shouldn't happen when I unplug it?

99stackedpowerstroke 05-08-2011 03:58 PM

what exactly does the wastegate do and how do know if its bad??

shorty2tall 05-10-2011 12:51 PM

boost seems low to me???

Ok so with the waste gate unplugged it makes 20 instead of 18 so do u think boost leak for sure?

So is this a normal place for them to leak? Or should I be worried?
