Drain the oil rail before you pull the injector out. there's two plugs (can't remember the size offhand, but they are different from year to year, if I recall rightly.) in the tube lookin' thing across the top of the head. Wait until the oil stops running out, then pull the injector. This avoids the oil in the cylinder. The shop manual tells you to drain the fuel rail in the head, but it's kind of a pain to do, so it seldom gets done. Bar the motor over after you put the injector in, (ONLY IF YOU DRAIN THE RAIL - IF YOU DON'T DRAIN THE RAIL, DON'T PUT THE INJECTOR IN FIRST) and change the oil.

I'd suggest moving the injector to a different cylinder and checking to see if the code follows it around.

If you have access to the eqiupment, try doing an injector buzz test on the injectors when the engine is cold (sat overnight).

Not going to argue with what the book says, but after 10-15 injector changes I have never pulled the plugs and never had an issue. Just MHO, but its a time killer.

And Jimmy, everything from later 99 to end of production came with a AE LL injector.

Planning on getting a motorcraft injector, or is it worth buying an aftermarket or rebuilt? And should I put the LL injector back in? Thanks

they are made by Alliant not motorcraft.... only advantage of a aftermarket one is it MIGHT be cheaper..... no, if your gettin a new injector, that will replace the LL... but save the LL incase you have a injector go bad.... the LL at least get you somewhere in a pinch...

I've got three injectors from our parts department for the last 7.3 I did. Two were Motorcraft, one was Alliant Power in the Motorcraft box. LOL

And the only reason I pull the plugs out of the oil rails is it's easier to bar the motor over with just a little bit of fuel in the cylinders, and it's an excuse to go up front and get a cup of coffee. :D

so I replaced the injector and all is good so far( I only put 5 miles on it so far)I did pull the 2 oil drain plugs first , let it drain for about 5 minutes, then swaped it out with a reman. motorcraft injector. Thanks for all the input. By the way it had an AD in #8
