my truck was cranking fast too, but with the one battery being shot it wouldnt start. if i were you, i would still get the batteries tested though. most auto parts dealers like advance or napa will do it for free. even if the batteries are not the problem you will still find out how good or bad they are and if they have to be replaced or not.

Your thread went to the powerstroke section. My truck goes in this week for the glow plugs and it sounds like its doing the same thing, so I will let you know how I make out

I checked the gpr with a test light and it does not have power on the glow plug side so monday morning I will go to the international dealer and pick up a gpr. when tried to take off the gpr it was actually fried under the rubber hood on the side that is always hot, anyone have any idea what could cause it to fry like that. When I turned the nut it just crumbled the plastic housing and the stud busted right out. :humm:

sounds like it's been really hot, like it's been shorted. when you change it check to see if there is a fuse that also may be blown. how long are you letting the glow plugs run before you're trying to start it? what is the out door temp? what grade oil are you using? all this will effect how it starts.

sirthomas, don't the glow plugs have a sensor that tells them how long to stay on? I only have a problem when the temps get around low 40's. I use rotella 15w 40. The truck starts just fine when the temps are warmer, actually it starts imediately, never a hesitation (knock on wood).

well knowing now that that relay is bad i'd replace that. it would also be a good time to replace the glow plugs. i did a writeup on how to replace the injectors and glowplugs here a few weeks ago. skip all the injector talk on mine and go to the glowplug replacement. if you have never done it before it'll prolly take you ~ 2-3 hours. if you know how to turn a wrench good then maybe 1-2 hours. i could prolly get all 8 replaced in an hour or so. it would be a good time to inspect the valve cover gaskets and under valve cover harnesses. if the harness shorted out on a rocker arm or a pushrod it'll burn up the relay (solenoid) quickly...

a shorted out glowplug wire or glowplug could have caused the solenoid to burn up

I see. Is there a way to test them for a short without getting under the covers?
