96 crank no start

I have read a lot of post about this and checked what I have read with no good results. Let me tell you all what happened, was driving about 40 MPH, let off throttle to slow for RR crossing, check engine light came on, (before I hit crossing), truck just quit running, could not start back up, but cranks over just fine. Checked Engine oil, its perfect, Swapped IDM, no luck, Changed CPS, no luck, Checked all fuses, all are good. Rpm gauge does move when cranking but not a lot, no smoke out of tail pipe, tried unplugging fuel bowl heater, but not sure what wire it is, but the #22 maxi fuse not blown. Could bad valve cover gasket/harness cause this, could they cause IDM, & or PCM to go out. Going to check HPOP level tonight, fuel filter has fuel in it about half way, Changed IPR, Injectors, Valve cover gaskets, a couple yrs ago, has ran bad ever since. I am at a loss with this, any info is greatly appreciated. I am tired of throwing parts at it, & our Ford dealer here does not have a good diesel dept.

check the VC plugs for signs of shorting out. they will be melted.

Both codes are pointing to the IDM

My 95 did that ended up being the valve cover gasket harness was burnt and i burnt up the ecm.. Was from running a superchip. The old gold ones.

fordornothing 01-19-2012 06:55 PM

i've never heard of a superchip frying the PCM. especially burning the VC plugs. i know of 2 cases where edge has fried the PCM tho...

you said you swapped idm, have you swapped pcm?

No, I have not, I am trying to find someone that has an extra. I do not want to fork out a bunch of money and find out after the fact that was not the problem. I have a couple more things I am going to try this weekend, If nothing works out I wthink I will just bite the bullet and hope for the best.

defently check the plugs going because they might be burnt up causing the injectors not to fire and get fuel to start the truck

I replaced the IDM, it was bad. The check engine light blinks once, after unplugging the map sensor, light stayed on, did the same to the two other three wire sensors and they did not make any difference. so replaced the map sensor this weekend. The light still just blinks once when key turned on, the truck runs, just really bad. With this light not staying on when the key is turned on, does that sound like a problem with the PCM, could I have a problem with the PCM, its what I have been told.

you should very carefully inspect the plugs that connect to the valve cover harness. had one a short while back, give me problems. of the 5 wires that go to each plug, 2 go to the gp's, 2 go to the injectors to make them fire, and #5 or the center one is a return signal to the idm from the injectors. this connector in the plug was distorted, however it happened, but would not let her run.:argh:
