fuel dumping out of turbo
 

i bought a 94 1/2 f350 yesterday(first year of powerstroke) i was told it had a blown turbo by the PO i bought it from. i had the truck towed to my house and started looking at it to fix, i found the turbo is in great condition, what i was told was oil spraying is diesel fuel spraying from the turbo/exhaust down pipe joint. the only way i can figure fuel getting to the exhaust side of the turbo is if a cylinder is loading up and fuel is getting blown out of the exhaust.. also the engine is really hard to start, idles great once it starts but doesn't rev up very good,and the oil is 2 inches high on the dipstick..
does it sound like i have a loose injector or need replacement o-rings or??? how could the engine load up like that?
my buddy that is a professional auto mechanic told me the engine must have a dropped exhaust valve letting the injector run overtime and filling the engine up with fuel, i don't think he really knows much about powerstroke diesels so i'm looking for a second opinion on that..
im hoping someone here can help,i have been wrenching all my life but diesels are new to me

it could be a cracked injector cup and/ or bad injector o rings. but that would have to be a ton of fuel to not be burning to be pouring out of the exhaust. i'd check into cups and o rings. i'd do a compression test too.

I would be double checking to make sure it's fuel and that it is actually coming through the turbo... Seems to me that is a long distance to go for raw fuel...

truly sounds to me like a bad exhaust turbine side seal in the turbo, that would blow a lot of oil into the exhaust. a rebuild kit is only $50. But that doesn't explain the dipstick now does it... maybe you have a 2fer. could be some bad injector o-rings too. not to mention, and someone correct me if I am wrong, but there is really not enough fuel pressure to get that much raw fuel to the exhaust, just based on how these goofy a$$ huei injectors are put together. experience tells me that oil/fuel spewing out of the exhaust joint can only be the turbine seal.

i defenatly have a lot of fuel pouring out of the turbo exhaust outlet. it looks black from washing out all the soot,but it is thin and not oily at all.once the truck runs a few seconds you get clear diesel pouring out...i thought it was coming from the pump below the turbo, when i fired it up and looked,i get a stream running down from the turbo, not spraying up..the injectors were supposedly just changed before the truck broke down.i have read that the injector hold down bolts can vibrate out and the injectors blow out and dump everything..this truck has been started 5 times for seconds in the last few days,it sat for 4 months before that...
the story i got is the PO bought this truck from the original owner,a 70yo man from Florida. he had the truck for a few months,did a lot of repairs, tires, brakes, clutch, starter, batterys, injectors... he was driving and lost power and went through a 1/4 tank of fuel in no time,
a diesel turbo shop said the turbo is blown and it is blowing oil everywhere,but no metal was blown into the engine.the PO found a used replacement turbo but had no idea how to change it,so it sat for 4 months till i made him an offer for the truck..
if the same shop installed the injectors that diagnosed the turbo,that might be the biggest problem.. i am planing on pulling the valve covers tomorrow to get a look at it, and take a compression test on the cylinders.i'm betting i will find an injector not bolted down..

I'm not sure how the fuel is getting into the turbo though... It would have to go through the cylinder, through the exhaust manifold and up the uppipes to get out the turbo... It wouldn't be a fluid at that point...

I have a feeling it is oil as the turbo uses oil. I think Crazycooter is on to something...

i pulled the drivers side valve cover tonite..3 of the 4 injector hold downs were barely finger tight. i bet the passenger side is just as bad..i'm hoping an o ring kit and oil change will take care of it..
i got to drive the truck for the first time today, around my yard, back to the garage to work on it..i tightened the exhaust down pipe clamp first, to minimize the fuel leaking. i had a huge cloud of white smoke

is there a way to test, or have the injectors tested while they are out to be sure they are not stuck open? can the international dealer down the street do it reasonably?

Injectors can be flow tested... Not sure if the IH dealer can do it, but a vendor like Rosewood can test them...

STOP DRIVING IT!!!

If it truely has bad injector O rings and coppers they will leak into the crank case, causing bearing damage, cylinder and piston damage. STOP DRIVING IT!!!


Replace the injector O rings and coppers and go from there.

I have seen raw fuel POURING out of the tail pipe on a 2001 PSD... it was before your time but used to be great forum fotter. Good old Andrew.:argh:
