Ford Powerstroke Fuel Mileage

Can you guys tell me what the best gas mileage you've all had running these powerstrokes? I'm going to be doing a lot of commuting and am looking to buy one, have my eye on a 97 quad cab. What kinda gas mileage will this thing come with stock? How easy are they to significantly improve mileage. I'm reading the thread about the article about the 2000 f350. would this be possible on the 94-97 gen rigs? Thanks! :tu:

PS what should I look for/avoid when buying one?

Re: Ford Powerstroke Gas Mileage

In my 97 4x4 ex cab lb I avg 15 city - 20 highway (if i m ez on it which dont happen often) I also run 285's. If u were to get a 2 wd manual it could b done.

If mileage is ur concern save ur money and buy a cheap beater car. A VW tdi can get as much as 50mpg

I get about 15 with mine. Most I have seen is 18. I agree get a tdi if your worried about milage

temps425 07-11-2011 02:28 PM

I need a pick up for a daily driver for my business so mileage isnt THAT big of a deal. I just want the best mileage for a pickup truck. I wonder if I would be better off with a dodge 5.9 1/2 ton? I was just reading the forums and if I can get 26-30mpg I'd take it!

I'm assuming that dodge getting 30mpg is a manual trans?

Re: Ford Powerstroke Gas Mileage

No 5.9 in a half ton. Unless u make it.

You won't get that kind of mileage out of a 7.3... And I would be hardpressed to believe 30 even out of a dodge...

My buddies 5.9 1/2 ton is nowhere close to where you stated...

What do you need a pickup for? Do you need a 3/4 or 1ton truck?

My 6" lifted, 33" tires automatic f250 gets about 18mpg w/ 50/50 city/highway and having a LOT of fun with it, averages 18mpg. If I were to do 100% highway, I'd probably hit 20-21mpg. If I keep my truck offroad in the fields or mud, pulling people out and having fun, I'll average 16-ish mpg for the tank. My 2000 f250 6spd got about 21mpg city, but I never drove a straight highway tank so I dunno. My POS '97 12v dually got 16mpg no matter WHAT. But most people in their 12v 5spds get 23-26mpg highway.

the 5.9 half ton assuming your talking about a stock truck would be a 360 gasser and 30? no way.

justanother92 07-11-2011 05:45 PM

My 95 4x4 psd gets 13 max and it is stock with auto, i dont know if that is normal or below but i am not impressed. 1st gen dodge 4x4 manaul gets 18 easy and low 20 s if driven right.

what kind of shape is it in? Good fresh oil, trans oil, front and rear end oil have a huge impact on mileage my bet is it is in rough shape and has been neglected. :tu:

Didnt put the 360 being a 5.9 in a half ton together..lol my bad

Your also comparing a mileage and power robbing auto Ford to a straight drive Dodge. Like I said, my straight drive F250 wouldn't EVER see below 18mpg city; usually hovering around 21mpg city.

power robbing manual? didnt tests show that manuals took less power than autos? manuals can be driven to preference too

It was a misprint, Punk. Long time no speak Erik

ya im shocked you put the pink shirt pic up for your avatar. i wish i was done with mine and i'd give ya the milage on old clifford out there. not too far off. i like the 94-97 model because theres more metal. i dont like the plastic on the "superduty." i think sd's are heavier too (not heavier than mine :tu: ) so you should be able to get possibly a little better but weight doesnt matter too much on these

85_305 07-12-2011 09:38 AM

Yes typically SD's are heavier. But I thought you said you liked the pink shirt and told me to post it as my avatar?!

prison 07-12-2011 01:09 PM

ha i dont see how they could be heavier with that plastic on them. i'd have all of it cracked in a second. idk its a pretty ballsy choice for an avatar lol

95powersmoker 07-12-2011 06:16 PM

FWIW, My F250 Powerstroke Auto gets 16-21 depending on how I drive and city vs. highway.

prison 07-12-2011 06:36 PM

are 250's significantly lighter than 350's? just for comparison

They really dont have all that much plastic lol. But I think they are just heavier due to frames/sizing....?

I'm not sure of a 250/350 weight differences. I know they have beefier suspension, other than that I'm not sure of any weight adders...

rico.mtltire 08-25-2011 05:51 PM

the best i have gotten from my 96 auto 4 door 4x4 on 33" mudders with a evolution programer set to tow is 15mpg, and thats driving easy with the cruise on and 95% highway, now, my tdi golf has gotten me a 51mpg on cruise 95% highway.

85_305 08-25-2011 08:10 PM

You only get 51mpg in your tdi?! I get 50-52mpg city in my Jetta and 63-64mpg going 55mph on the highway! Granted, the Jetta is more aerodynamic than the Golf, but not that much to cause such a disparity. Start modding. Now.

rico.mtltire 08-25-2011 08:25 PM

She isn't stock stock, vnt17, straight piped, I have the front mount Hung but not plumbed, stock ic is cracked and bleeding boost but still getting 12psi with a 15psi spike, euro intake to be installed when I plumb the front mount, 4bar sensor that I got with the car if I decide to install it. Just missing time, she is my dd so downtime is an Issue, its a 2000 also, the pd's of today get better mileage.

85_305 08-25-2011 08:35 PM

Careful you dont overspeed your turbo having that IC leak... doesn't take much at all to snap a shaft or rail a compressor backplate. You have an ALH which gets much better mileage than the PD's do.

rico.mtltire 08-26-2011 03:50 PM

i was under the impression the pds get better mileage, and i'm not worried about blowing the turbo, whats a better reason then that to upgrade it all....lol. i have thought about driving at 55mph to see what mileage i get but up here in the frozen north the limit is 65mph and no one does under that. i hate to see the billy big riggers riding my ass in my little golf..

whats all don't to your tdi..... a little thread hijacking never hurt anyone right....lol

85_305 08-26-2011 05:25 PM

No pd's get worse mileage. I drive 7mph over the speedlimit and consistently get 57/58mpg.

I have a bigger turbo, fmic, lift pump, dp, exh, p&p head, clutch, egr/cooler delete, stg 3 tuning, yadda yadda. It puts down some numbers. IQ is unknown (not monitored), vnt is WAY out of adjustment, and the car needs a retune for the larger turbo. Oh, and I need a 3bar map hehe

Truckyard1 08-26-2011 11:04 PM

To jump on this hijacking, is that the old diesel Jetta's, or the new ones? 50+ mpg, I may just be gettin a new car:tu:

85_305 08-27-2011 10:38 AM

Mines a 2000 and the other guys is a 2000. The newer common-rail cars touch around 45mpg highway stock... though with mods I'm sure they could hit just as high as my car (and of course, deleting all the emissions stuff..). But the 90's diesel VW's get 50+mpg also.. the passats are the way to get with the 90's diesels.

Truckyard1 08-27-2011 03:17 PM

Thanks, I'm definitely gonna keep my eye out for one now. My truck's 20mpg doesnt even approach that. Hows the acceleration on those things?

85_305 08-28-2011 11:42 AM

Stock it's alright... modded, fast. I burn brand new mustang and camaro v6's, 2000's mustang gt's, hung in with a m-package 135i (twin turbo 330hp and 380ft/lbs tq in a car that weighs the same as mine). All on 16psi untuned. My turbo can handle 30psi.

2ndGen 08-29-2011 12:15 AM

I just picked up a 95 Extra cab, 4x4, auto, and so far I've got 16 and 17 mpg on the first 2 tanks. Lots of hills and some towing, no straight highway stuff....

fordornothing 08-29-2011 03:15 PM

i'm convinced mileage is different between vehicles even if they are identicle. my 99 get's 16 tops on the flats between hays and denver. but going over berthoud pass with a trailer i was gettin 19. makes sense huh?

rico.mtltire 09-01-2011 02:47 PM

i was wondering, for all you guys running 4" straight pipes and 3" down pipes, did the mileage get better or worse?

85_305 09-01-2011 03:21 PM

Mileage got better for sure. On every single diesel I've owned the mileage got better w/ dp and exhaust.

joebob3093 09-01-2011 03:45 PM

it didnt do anything for me. it could help but i think its all in your head.

rico.mtltire 09-01-2011 03:52 PM

only one way to find out right.... that pancake down pipes bugs me.

85_305 09-01-2011 04:27 PM

I've measured the gains in my odometer in every single one of my trucks ;)

fordornothing 09-01-2011 07:43 PM

talk to my buddy. he'll tell ya that it makes all the difference. so claimed 28 highway. maybe downhill in neutral with a tail wind and a semi pushin him.

85_305 09-01-2011 11:15 PM

^I'm not sure about 28mpg.. but my modded cummins could hit 26mpg with a steady foot. But that was more than just an exhaust that was done.

fordornothing 09-02-2011 06:47 PM

95 stroker, DIY intake, DIY 5" straight pipe and a edge evo. not gonna happen.

85_305 09-02-2011 11:35 PM

Nope, Not gonna happen :tttt:
