RPM Jumping

When I start my truck it will not idle smooth, but will jump up and down by a few hundred
RPM. All I have to do is bring up the RPM for a few seconds and it goes away. It only happens a few times, but is this something I should keep my eye on?

Is it a romping sort of symptom?

Diesel cat 04-14-2011 10:25 AM

Yes, it happens just as I start it up. Usually after it had warmed up.

If you put the truck in neutral and start it, is the problem still there? If it goes away, that would lead me to believe bad Transmission range sensor.

I used to have this problem... I changed injectors and it went away.. I had a feeling it was the O-rings on the old injectors causing it.

What is done to your truck? How many miles? When did you last change the oil?

Diesel cat 04-14-2011 11:02 AM

It doesn't happen all the time so it would be hard to test it.
I just bought the truck a few months ago. She has 110k on her and
And has a fresh oil change.

If this matters , the first time I changed my fuel filter it was covered with alge.

95powersmoker 04-14-2011 11:02 AM

Hmm. Try starting it in Neutral and see if it happens or not. Let us know...

Yes... That does matter. Algae or oil? Did the truck sit before you bought it? How many tanks of fuel have you run through it? When you changed the filter, did you clean the FPR screen?

Diesel cat 04-14-2011 01:35 PM

Ya my truck was owned by an elderly gentelman that only used it a few times a year before he sold it. No I might need to clean the FDR screen. I know my drain hose frome the fuel bulb was also clogged with alge. I have only filled the tanks twice since I have bought the truck.
I know when I am driving on the highway when I get to 2000 RPM the engine just wants to stay at that RPM and you really have to push it past that point.

95powersmoker 04-14-2011 01:39 PM

Might want to run some algae treatment through the tanks...

Thanks allot for ask your help.:rocking:

Pulled the FPR off and cleaned the screen, it was covered
With alge. Throttle response feels better . I bet
The entire FPR needs to be taken apart and cleaned, not
Sure if I got the proper tools for that.
Got a scare when one o ring went flying when the FPR came
Loose, thank God I found it in the fuel bulb.
Found out diesel fuel makes all tools slippery:tu:
