excuse the ignorance

Whats an upgraded valve body in your tranny do? does it just help with line pressure and lubrication? if so, how does it do it vaguely? what does it do?

95powersmoker 03-08-2011 10:43 PM

Pretty much, It directs fluid and regulates pressure..

CSIPSD 03-08-2011 10:46 PM

Changes shift firmness and timing, boost line pressures helping to keep the clutches locked up.

97dieselnewb 03-08-2011 11:58 PM

So would an upgraded valve body be a good investment, Possibly tranny saving, on a truck with mild modifications?

Re: excuse the ignorance

An upgreaded valve body would be a very good investment.

97dieselnewb 03-09-2011 01:27 PM

whats a good valve body to go with? I was looking at the one at beans diesel

95powersmoker 03-09-2011 01:28 PM

BTS or RacerX gets my vote..

joebob3093 03-09-2011 02:45 PM

Re: excuse the ignorance

I would go with bts or john woods

Sent from my DROIDX

GT's 03-12-2011 05:59 PM

I'd go for a BTS myself. A valve body isn't overy expensive but the problem is yes it can help prolong a transmissions life. However when the tranny goes it's going to be toast too from the debris getting into it. So if you have a very mild build then go for it and hope it all holds out. If you're going with a bit higher build then save your money for the full on transmission build later.

So are you saying toss a VB on it and call it a day? (Without putting in a better tc..)

if your talking about GT's post i think he's sayin pay now or pay later basically.

85_305 03-12-2011 10:15 PM

I'm just confused, I guess..

When I wrote up my thread of mods, I was being told my intake/exhaust/tuner/stage I's would be fine with a stock transmission... but as a security measure, I could install a vb/tc and be good to go...

It depends on what shape your tranny is in currently and how you drive... You drive conservatively and there is no reason your transmission shouldn't live unless its hurting now.

You can't be to careful, there's the least you can do and the right/best way to do something

Ohhh ya.. that makes sense. Since the trans is BRAND new oem-Ford rebuild in my truck I think thats why everybody said I'd be ok. So beating on it once in a while/heavy-tow once in a while is ok, but since I'm a granny-driver 98% of the time, my trans will be ok?

Ya this is true. Although as I've come to find out my local diesel shop wants $700 just to INSTALL a vb/tc lol

Diesel Dawgs Performance 03-13-2011 05:52 PM

If your transmission is still in good shape I would do a TC and VB at the same time.

Again, It's tough to say for sure... I know plenty of guys running around with 1's and a stock tranny.. I also know a bunch who blew tranny's with less...

Unfortunately, there is no formula that says your tranny will handle the power or not. It either does or doesn't.

I was thinking about doing the vb/tc, but in parts alone I'm up to about a grand, then labor is another 700$ (i think I can shop around and lower that a touch...) but still... thats a ton of money if I dont need to spend it.

Autos suck. Hence why out of 4 diesels this is my first one :tttt: Couldn't pass up the deal though.

95powersmoker 03-13-2011 06:25 PM

Auto's are great once they are built...

prison 03-13-2011 06:26 PM

convert it then lol

Heard that. They can be fast, and great for going in the brush. For hauling, I'm a straight drive fan

Fok that buddy. No time and extra funds for that.
Hey I forgot to tell you, congrats on getting the new 'stroke!

prison 03-13-2011 06:54 PM

it's not here yet man but it's gonna be one bad mf when i got it done. it's long as hell, dually, ten lug axles, 5 speed. oh by the way u know anybody with a zf5 around here? i need one for project 8594.

85_305 03-13-2011 07:29 PM

Call up bros diesel they have access to everything. Other than that, nope. Maybe m&m?

prison 03-13-2011 07:34 PM

from my experience with joe he couldn't help me. i know howbills doesnt have one. i'll have to try m&m. not enough junk yards with diesels around here. i gotta see your new truck man

85_305 03-13-2011 07:56 PM

What do you know about installing a torque convertor? Maybe I'll let ya see it soon :p lol

But as soon as I buy it we should meet up and I'll show ya. I'm so excited to buy it!

In my experience Howbills (which is right down the road from my parents..) doesn't have this sort of thing. I would try m&m and if no luck there, your screwed lol.

prison 03-13-2011 08:00 PM

haha i hate auto transmissions so nothin. i have a flex plate in the garage that i could loot at though. couldnt be that hard. when ya gettin it? i'm not sure when i'll have the f-superduty here

85_305 03-13-2011 08:02 PM

Dunno.. this dude says "when it stops snowing"... so prolly another damn 4 months. But he did tell me sometime in April he'd sell it to me.. just wish he'd sell it now and not later!

prison 03-13-2011 08:09 PM

the superduty should be here april or early may. i'm hopin the snow is done now. do you know yet if you plan to up the trans a little?

95powersmoker 03-13-2011 08:10 PM

:offtopic:

85_305 03-13-2011 08:21 PM

I'm hoping to NOT up the trans; that would be soooo much money that I dont wanna spend. I think I"m just gonna do the valve body for now for better/harder/faster shifts, and I'll hold off on the torque converter. What do you suggest?

prison 03-13-2011 08:26 PM

how much is the tc? i think with not doing the tc now if you tear up the current one you could mess up the valve body. which of course will end up costing more. you dont know if it'll tear apart but you might get into one of those situations where you just mess around once and it ends up costing ya big. So i'd say if you have the money go all the way. if you dont you may be able to get around it and maybe put a tc in in the future but then the trans has to come out twice

85_305 03-13-2011 08:33 PM

The tc is like 800$+... NOT cheap. Honestly, I "have" the money... but it's money that I'd really like to put towards other things. I dont think the trans has to come out for the VB though....

Correct. Tranny can sit in place for vb.

prison 03-13-2011 08:50 PM

oh true true i forgot about the vb. it's a tough call. how much is the valve body?

95powersmoker 03-13-2011 08:54 PM

Not too expensive. I think if you buy a BTS valve body, He will subtract it from the total cost when you buy a built tranny later... Might be worth looking into.

Saweet! So do you think I'll be ok if I only upgrade the VB and hold off on the TC?

I think the VB was like 200$ or 300$... but I got a guy gonna hook me up with the install of that one.

prison 03-13-2011 08:54 PM

now what does built consist of?

I think thats the route I would go if I wasn't going to build the transmission. However, I wouldn't start building big power unless I had the money for a built tranny.

Means, do it right the first time and don't worry about it again... Buy a BTS and be done.

85_305 03-13-2011 08:58 PM

I know when I hear "built" and "automatic" in the same sentence, It's usually a 5-6k$ deal at the minimum... noooooo thank you son.

powersmoke- Does 'big power' consist of stage 1's, tuner, intake and exhaust? lol. Cuz thats all I'll ever be doing to this truck power-wise.

BTS is like 4200 I think... I could be wrong, that's what I've heard.
