New to Diesel, bought a Powerstroke and have Questions

I just bought a 95 7.3 turbo, smokes when first starts and a little still after warming up, does anybody have any advice for what to look for?

blk99 12-10-2009 02:30 PM

what color is the smoke? once you drive the truck a little does it go away?

How many miles, any mods to it?

Sounds like it may need glow plugs and or a GPR but lets get some more info before jumping.

sounds like a pretty common thing on an OBS, never has one that didn't smoke a little white when you first started it up, if it gets below 50 mine will smoke for about 5 minutes or so as it idles, then goes away when i start driving....you might have some injectors or injector seals going bad, what color is the smoke?

greenmonster 12-13-2009 11:03 AM

Whats the background on the truck, was it rode hard and put away wet? or was it tookin care of?

Z!!! 12-13-2009 07:24 PM

the smoke is gray and is pretty heavy when you first start it, it stays pretty much the whole tome its running.... it dosnt smoke wuite as much after about 20 minutes of driving

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

it has 284000 miles on it no mods yet... bone stock

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

as far as i know its been takin pretty good care of, mostly long hauls not city driving looks nice, cracked dash, dings in the bed..... used to pull a goose neck

yeehaw 12-13-2009 07:33 PM

don't worry about it, its just a typical OBS ford with an international sir

Z!!! 12-13-2009 07:52 PM

also it has a loud knock when you accelerate hard..... would this be an issue?

yeehaw 12-13-2009 08:44 PM

that sounds like an issue, can you get a video of the truck so we can hear this knock?

Z!!! 12-14-2009 09:43 AM

i'll try to post one tomorrow

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

apparently my phone videos will not post to youtube.....

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

BTW what is OBS?

yeehaw 12-14-2009 09:58 PM

obs is old body style, try to set up a photobucket account and upload them via that

Z!!! 12-15-2009 02:28 PM

well it crapped out on me yesterday.... damn $1000 diesel.... i found a 97 in perfict condition so im goin to look at it later.... this one is $2800.... any tips on makin sure its a good one and not some piece i waste my money on?

CSIPSD 12-15-2009 02:45 PM

What do you mean it "crapped out"? More then likely its very easy fix...

Z!!! 12-15-2009 02:57 PM

i was drivin down the road, and it got extreamly loud and died, pulled over, checked under the hood for someting obvious, checked the oil, bone dry.

never got an oil light, psi gauge never said nothin..... nothin and its locked up now good parts hopefully

CSIPSD 12-15-2009 04:25 PM

Its impossable to have a PSD run out of oil like that. The injectors run on oil, and will die long before the motor will "lock" up...

yeehaw 12-15-2009 05:42 PM

yea usually get a bad miss, mine had no throttle and was shakin really bad, pulled over and i had 3 qts left

Z!!! 12-16-2009 09:58 AM

apparently i hit something in the road, there is a huge hole in the oil pan, it wont hit a lick.

i bought another one yesterday tho

12vcummins96 12-16-2009 10:02 AM

man that sux definetly alot of parts though

yeehaw 12-16-2009 07:56 PM

prolly rotted, trucks are common for it
