97 powerstroke, white smoke in morning

Hey DB,
When I start my 97 F250 powerstroke in the morning (Summer 65-70 degrees), it blows a good amount of white smoke for 5-10 minutes if I let it idle. After the truck is warmed up, it no longer smokes white.

Input anyone?

wildbill 08-29-2009 04:45 PM

Faulty injectors

PSD 08-29-2009 04:49 PM

Can anyone elaborate...?

mysterync 08-29-2009 05:44 PM

It really depends, Sound injector related. Incomplete burn of the fuel caused by improper atomization can cause a white fuel smoke thats very strong, almost burn your eyes. If the turbo is leaking a bit of oil or you've got a leaking valve stem seal the warm up valve can cause oil smoke but I'm not sure if it's controlled by IAT values or not.
If it's fuel it'll sting your eyes a bit. Get some more detail to us and we'll help if we can!

mysterync,

I actually have the turbo off right now. Replacing some o-rings underneath that gave me a nasty leak.

PSD 09-01-2009 10:29 PM

Turbo is back on, and still smokes white for the first start.
Anyone ?

Saying faulty injectors in jumping the gun, there are many other things that need to be tested first before throwing any parts at it.

Smell your exhaust first and see if it smells like fuel or oil, then you can go from there

dieseldan73 01-21-2010 05:43 PM

my truck didi that for about 6 to 8 months then one of the injectors went bad and washed out a cylinder in the engine so i bought a new engine.

yeehaw 01-22-2010 08:55 PM

i can't say i have ever seen a powerstroke that didn't blow a little white when first started and it was chillier outside

CSIPSD 01-23-2010 12:43 AM

Could be a glow plug or two, could be a leaky nozzle, could be a cracked injector cup...

Whats it smell like?

PSD 01-23-2010 11:57 AM

Strong smell of diesel.
It smokes a lot more now that its cold around here, but stops when she warms up.
Engine isnt warm enough to burn fuel completely at first start of the day?

cody73 01-29-2010 11:07 AM

check for leaks if there isnt any leaks you may need new injectors, but the smallest of fuel leaks will give you white smoke after a motor sits for a few hours or over night

bills7.3 02-01-2010 03:28 PM

initial start-up should smoke white briefly, heated fuel from glow plugs, passing not fully burned, hence white smoke.:argh:

idk if this has been settled out yet but has it mr psd? just wondering. my dads got a budyd that doesnt give a flying shit turd about his powerstroke and it does the same thing as yours was doing. i was helping them out and as soon as he started the truck a big azz thick white smoke ring of white smoke came out of the exhaust pipe. i thought oh dear lord? i asked him and he says he dont even care. what an incompetent dick-o-head

negative. my truck doesnt shoot out white smoke when i start it. very thin non black exhaust yes. but i know hwat this guy is talking about. hes talking about WHITE SMOKE. like VERY THICK WHITE SMOKE. ALMOST AS IF SNOOP DOGG TOOK A YANK OFF A BIGAZZ DOOB-A-PUFF DOOBIE AND BLEW IT OUT THE TAIL PIPE FOR 5 MINUTES. im not trying to be a know it all but he should figure it out hopefully soon. i would if it was my truck. good luck to you psd

I hear ya boss... I thinkit'd be a problem if it didnt smoke on a start up hahaha:jump:

When I read the first post, I initially thought of bad injector o-rings. When I saw the post that the exhaust smelled like fuel, I thought leaking injectors.

BIG NIG 05-23-2010 02:45 AM

how many miles???? i would bet money its injector o-rings

all the ones i seen with bad cups had the cooling system filled with diesel, more pressure in the fuel system than the cooling.

What he said. check your O-Rings.

I know this is an older post. Just that years ago I owned a 1997 PSD 7.3 that did the same thing. It turned out to be bad glow plug harness.

PaleHROse 10-23-2010 12:06 PM

Is this more like a white haze that disappears? Does water come out of the end pipe at the same time? if YES then it's normal. If it has a blue tint to it it's not normal. Does the truck do anything else that doesn't seem normal?

Jake Wiederhold 03-09-2017 06:57 AM

Mine does this every morning until it warms up. New glow plugs and new injectors and everything. Lots of white smoke when started and warming up. Looks like fog outside as its warming up. Drive it for 2 minutes or so after its warming up for 10 minutes it doesnt smoke anymore. Curious what someone thinks it could be.

joebob3093 03-12-2017 03:17 PM

depending on the miles it could be low compression

Jake Wiederhold 03-12-2017 09:22 PM

217,xxx miles. Has more blowby than normal so i dont believe it would be from low compression. I know some of my smoke is because the higher blow by causing oil going though the crank case vent and into the turbo and buring oil but i rerouted it and it vents into the air and not the turbo now and still smokes.

Ordered stage 1 injectors and put those in and lubed the o-rings as they got put in. Didnt smoke like this after i changed them.

joebob3093 03-12-2017 11:12 PM

blow by is gasses getting by the rings which causes a loss in compression
