2008 Ford F250 - Build A Better Super Duty

2008 Ford F250 - Build A Better Super Duty
http://images.dieselpowermag.com/fea...front_view.jpgDuring the past six months, we've partnered with Airaid to test the most popular upgrades that readers make to their Super Duty trucks. Our goal was to see how the new '08 F-250 would respond to an air intake, an exhaust, a programmer, a lift kit, and tires and wheels. Working in stages, we began by upgrading the exhaust with a MagnaFlow system that replaced the stock hardware from behind the diesel particulate filter. Then we added Airaid's latest intake system for the 6.4L Power Stroke to ensure that the two upgrades would work in harmony.
Evidently, some exhaust-system and air-intake combinations can trigger a check-engine light when the backpressure sensor gets out of its operating range. Fortunately, we didn't have any issues with the Airaid and MagnaFlow combination.
For our second buildup stage, we installed a 4-inch Rancho suspension lift and 35-inch Nitto Dune Grappler tires mounted on the factory Ford wheels. The new ride height improved ground clearance, and the Dune Grappler tires were some of the smoothest and quietest 35-inchers we've tested. To see how big a tire we could fit on the Super Duty with the Rancho lift, we swapped on a set of BFGoodrich's redesigned 37-inch Mud-Terrain tires.
This month, we'll bring you the third and final stage of the buildup. Over the next 15 pages, we'll show you the latest upgrades for the '08 Super Duty and even throw in a roof-rack install on an '02 F-350 just for good measure. If there's something we left out that you'd like us to add in the future, drop us a line at our new e-mail address, dieselpower@sourceinterlink.com, and we'll bring it to you in a future issue.

Very nice truck! I know a lot of 08 owners will enjoy this because they want to do the same things to their trucks, but not if it will cause a lot of problems!

MotorOilMcCall 01-20-2008 03:43 PM

Cause a lot of problems? More than they already have? My buddy owns a landscaping and excavation business. He has a F350 SRW CC that he ended up making his personal vehicle because he can no longer tow with it (the 8in lift doesn't help). The power went way down with the 36" tires, and he's had quite a few problems in just the 6 months he's had it. Now all of his company trucks are either Chevy's or Dodges, and while the Chevy's have a few more suspension issues (CV boots and joints) and the Dodges have needed computer updates and TPMS malfunctions, they have been much more reliable than the Fords. Just seems like they should be focusing more on longevity than pimping it out.

Blue01F250 01-20-2008 05:29 PM

yah, but then how many magazines would that sell? hehehe

I hear ya -- all the newer diesels from the big 3 have things that need to be worked out , that is for sure.

I think frame wise these will be the best SUPER-DUTY to date ???

MotorOilMcCall 11-20-2008 08:48 AM

Frame wise, sure... Drivetrain wise, its coming close to the reputation of the 6 point oh no!

I have 1,106 miles, and no problems, running sweet & alot faster than my 7.3.

MotorOilMcCall 11-20-2008 02:20 PM

Consider yourself one of the lucky few... :c:

gunman41mag 11-20-2008 05:05 PM

If you see the DVD that FORD is giving out on the SUPER-DUTY 6.4 PSD, it's suppose to be the best truck ever made. All the parts are bigger & stronger than the chevy & dodge, The water pump is twice as large as the other 2 trucks.:yeah::ok1:

MotorOilMcCall 11-21-2008 12:12 PM

LOL... I'm sure it is, they need all that flow to cool the block that has a poorly engineered water jacket. You know the 6.4L was originally designed to be a 6-Cyl right? No joke.

I know that they have faulty radiator, but even the new dodge, has had their problems !!

I've got an 6.0 with 100 000miles on it now with a 6" lift 37's.....well you can see in my signature but the only problems I've ever had are the abs dont work cause the big tires throw the speedo out and the egr goes but besides that no problems ... o and I broke a u joint once but I was being dumb.

I keep hearing from everyone that the 6.0 is crap but even from owners but I dont personally know anyone that has ever had a real issue with any part of the truck

You need to get a tuner that will adjust your speedometer for the 37 inch tires !!!

atrd86 11-22-2008 04:08 PM

The PMT does and it took for a bit but than the speedo went nuts and now is just back to what it was before. Apparently the 05-07 have a glich and if it doesnt take permanently there is something a matter with my truck and it cant be fixed.

When I had the tires put on the dealership said they were going to adjust the speedo too and I noticed it wasnt done, when I talked to the manager he said he made sure they did it..... so I guess I have to live with it:argh: but I dont like abs anyway and I have the speedo on the PMT anyway. So mabey it will help me get out of a ticket if I have to

HI atrd86, ABS doesn't make your truck stop at a shorter distance !!! All ABS does is make you prevent you from locking your tires, all you have to do is pump your brakes, like we used to to in the old days !!!

atrd86 11-22-2008 07:11 PM

I know how ABS works!!! .... I dont think I ever hinted that I thought it made vehicles stop faster, I just said I didnt like it.
I hate ABS when I'm wheelin, especially in winter. From my experiences ABS seems to make stopping longer in most cases, just with some steering control.

HI atrd86, Your 100% correct about ABS, I had to get used to hitting the brakes & keeping my foot on the brakes !!!

MotorOilMcCall 11-22-2008 08:57 PM

ABS will stop a vehicle quicker in most cases, especially if its properly tuned.

Pumping the brakes is only as effective as how fast you can pump them, ABS pumps them hundreds of times a second.

Wonder how I lived all those years driving the old sport cars with-out ABS, OH I remember I pumped the brakes, when it started locking:humm: I guess today's drivers are to busy watching DVD, or talking on the cell-phone, or just to lazy to pump on their brakes.

I got an '08 with 30,000 miles on and had nothing but trouble since 17,000 or 18,000 miles. Regens every 50 to 70 miles and every 3rd or 4th time I have to pull over cause it won't hardly run. Hope yours is better than mine. Ford says its my problem not theirs. :argh:

HI txredman, Can you please give me more information, You should have 5 years/ 100,000 miles warranty on your engine, 5 years/ 60,000 miles the rest of your drivetrain, and 3 years/ 36,000 miles on the rest of the truck. Did you have a tuner ??? Did you remove the DPF or the factory exhaust ??? :humm:

They have flashed it and updated it 4 times and can't figure out why it regens so much. I paid extra for a 200,000 mile/$0 deductible because iI was one of the saps that bought an 03 with the "wonderful" new 6.0 and had been through lots of trouble with it. I don't have a tuner and didn't remove DPF or factory exhaust because I don't want to give them any ground to stand on. They are already trying to say "bad fuel". i guess every station in north texas & south oklahoma has bad fuel cause I cant pass one at 10 MPG. I sent complaints to the BBB, Ford and to my congressman - making sure everybody knows the trouble I'm having and once again ford don't want to take any blame. :madd:

Harley08 11-23-2008 08:04 PM

I love my 08 its a beast. I traded my 05 Harley Davidson for an 08 Harley Davidson and i almost got my new one about the same way my 05 was all except for i just need to some more upgraded aftermarket engine components so it'll run a little faster.

That's my next step, wanted to give them the option to 'offer' to buy it back first :rolleyes2: Texas LL says 4 unsuccesful repair attempts for the same problem. Now I have to call a lawyer & get the ball rolling on that. Gonna go over real good with a company that's fixin' to file bankruptcy for stupid screw ups like this and private jets! :humm:

HI txredman, I bought a 1999 F250 7.3 PSD SUPER-CAB LONG-BED with 32,800 miles in 2/2002 and paid $20,000, never had any engine problems, and it now has 141,000 miles, I went to buy a 2008 DODGE 2500 6.7 cummins mega-cab, dodge wanted $32,999, they didn't want to drop the price, I went to FORD, they had ONE 2008 F250 6.4 PSD SUPER-CAB LONG-BED for $36,000 & they told me they would let it go cheap, WHY ??? two reason, This F250 was at the dealer for 14 months & it didn't have PW, PDL, PM, PS & it only had am/fm radio, NO CD/player. I was just playing with them, when I said I only had $20,000 to spend, I got up to leave & the MANAGER to me to sit down, that he had to make a phone call, He came back & told me the best deal they can do is $21,698 SO I BOUGHT IT, I now have 1,243 miles & it's running perfect, my MPG are 12.8 to 14 in the city.

94cummins12v 11-23-2008 09:59 PM

nothin but problems with my dads 08 powerjoke, he originally had brolems with the piece of s**t 6.0 with blowing turbo hoses all day long, got tire of that and went out and bought the 6.4 and he hates his even worse 30,000 and its running like my 87 chevy 1500 v-8 no power what so ever, pulling a trailer the milage sucks and he can walk faster up a hill than he can pulling 8k up a pass

Power adds alot to the price, sounds like you got a pretty good deal. I thought I did until I hit 30,000 miles. It regened 3 times before that. The mechanics at the ford house hadn't dealt with one that did it to the extreme that mine was. I got a bulletin from another dealer that was sent out in Feb 07 that says its normal for it to do the stuff mine is doing - i bought mine in Nov 07. Going back to the dealership where I bought it (further away from me than the one thats been working on it) and asking them why they didn't metion that they were having issuses with these trucks when I bought it. I will keep y'all posted on whats happening so if anybody else has a problem like this they will know what to say or not to say. Preciate the advice and hope you enjoy your truck more than I'm enjoying mine. :c:
