loud whistle under hood?

I have a 2007 f250 6.0 with egr delete, studs, gaskets, sct. The other day i was driving to the beach and started to hear a loud whistle or whine from under the hood.so i pulled over but it stopped. Only seems tohappen when foots on the pedal. A little bit of turbo lag not a huge diff. What could this be? Btw i checked boots best i could didnt feel any rips. :argh:

Lilpooh 07-01-2012 04:42 PM

Sometimes the boots can rip at the very edge of the clamps where you can't feel the damage, it's best to remove the boots for inspection. Usually it's the boot coming off the turbo.

Check your flex joints on the exhaust up-pipe/y-pipe. Common for the flex joints to crack. Visually look for soot on piped, firewall and surrounding area. When the motor is cool, start her up and use your hand to feel for air/exhaust leaks at the flex joints.

bobfbigman 07-01-2012 11:39 PM

most likely its a ruptured plastic cooler tube, they tend to whistle, boots tend to whoosh.

Curry 07-02-2012 01:04 AM

Could it be that even if it doesn't happen all the time? And its a very loud whistle. Kinda hurts your ears if another cars beside you.

ERICWAYNE14 07-04-2012 10:43 AM

The y-pipe flex joints are real common, also the the y-pipe and downpipe connections to the back of the turbo are common for that if not seated properly. pretty noticeable by the eidence ofblack soot like lilpooh said earlier. but also check all turbo connections, CAC boots and all, maybe the egr valve hole, sometimes the metallic gasket wears down and blows out. Or if you have the full egr delete its an o-ring from that kit.

Curry 07-08-2012 01:10 PM

Ive searched every thing the best I could but couldn't find the source. Turbo spools up but feels like I have some turbo lag. Noise gets louder the higher the rpms.

Mdub707 07-08-2012 09:08 PM

Find a trustworthy friend, put the truck in drive with 4x4 engaged and the brakes on hard, and try spooling it up in the driveway and have that trustworthy friend try and find the leak. The key is not to run said buddy over.

Curry 07-09-2012 06:01 AM

Ill give that a try. Just a few mins ago i got to work and saw some white smoke after start up. Ended up with dtc P0401 egr?

Mdub707 07-09-2012 07:36 AM

It's just a code from your EGR delete. The check engine light isn't on right?

Curry 07-09-2012 08:21 AM

Its on now but i programmed my truck back to stock to check for codes.

Mdub707 07-09-2012 08:36 AM

That's why, no big deal, it wont hurt anything. Just from the EGR delete, the PCM is seeing a lack of EGR flow and tosses the code.

Update

Leaving work today when I started up my truck it sounded like a leak under the truck. Sounded like a lot of air. Got home left it running and felt around couldn't find it but still heard it. Found a little bit of soot on the fire wall right below the over flow tank. Seeing as im just getting started with diesel. Im thinking ill leave this one to my diesel tech.

06-sixoh 07-09-2012 05:28 PM

The fix is going to be pretty easy. If you dont feel comfortable, thats ok. Walk around with your tech, and watch what he looks for, and learn what you can from him.

Sounds like the y-pipe is cracked in the back, it's really the only thing that will have that loud whistle too. Maryland Performance Diesel has a set of upgraded pipes on sale now too...

Curry 07-09-2012 06:42 PM

I will definitely upgrade to those if that's the problem.

06-sixoh 07-09-2012 06:54 PM

If im not mistaken cracked y pipe sounds like a dry bearing or a squeeling belt. (?)

Curry 07-09-2012 07:14 PM

Forgot to mention I smelled exhaust through my ac. Didn't realize that could be from cracked y pipes. Always figured it was my diesel soaked work boots :nope:

While driving home today I thought it sounded similar to those also.

06-sixoh 07-09-2012 08:40 PM

I havent done too much reading up on cracked pipes, but from what i understand, those are the audible symptoms. Does the whistle quiet down after the truck is warm?

Mdub707 07-09-2012 08:57 PM

Mine would whistle ear piercingly loud when I first fired it up, but it would go away as the truck would warm up. That was a cracked up-pipe.

If it's cracked, you will definitely smell exhaust in the cab. It will smell like exhaust though, not raw fuel too.

Curry 07-09-2012 09:37 PM

Haven't smelled raw fuel to often. Not to sure of the difference. It not very strong tho and the whistle doesn't go down when it heats up. It is an ear piercing whistle tho.

06-sixoh 07-09-2012 09:45 PM

Without us being there to physically see the truck its going to be hard to diagnose. If you dont know exactly what to look for, it might be better to take it to a tech. But like i said before, walk around with him, and have him point out everything he is looking at, and everything he is thinking. Might as well have him show you where the EGR valve is as well, and how to pull it.

It is something simple... You have a boot or a pipe that is cracked. Causing lack of boost and the whistle. Fix it soon before it becomes a bigger issue. Let us know what you find.

Will do. Calling him tomorrow. Thanks for all the suggestions and help.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Just got done showing my tech. First thing he said was cracked y pipe. Ill be ordering a new one friday. :c:

Mdub707 07-10-2012 11:56 AM

Are you ordering another stocker or...???

MPD has a sale on them

Innovative also sells an upgraded kit, and I believe Elite does too. They remove the stock crappy bellows and weld in some HD flex joints. Much better. I think MPD's kits are like $250 right now. I thought about ordering some for mine...

Curry 07-10-2012 12:31 PM

I will be ordering aftermarket. Not sure from where yet. Gotta do some research and see some reviews. He said I was good to ride a few more days with it the way it is. Loosing diesel, and power tho.

Mdub707 07-10-2012 01:31 PM

I've seen pretty much all there is to offer, I'm going to order the MPD kit, the price is too good to beat. Pretty much all of them do the same thing.

MPD is selling some really nice up-pipe kits now with their custom built exhaust manifolds up to a T4 divided housing for guys running larger charges on the T4 platform, they have their fab/welding skills down man. :c:

Curry 07-10-2012 01:37 PM

All I need at the moment is y pipe. Might go ahead and get up pipe. Im thinking MPD also

Mdub707 07-10-2012 01:53 PM

MPD 6.0 HD Up-pipes

I think it's all one thing... but you might want to call and check. :c:

Curry 07-10-2012 08:32 PM

Im still waiting for them to get back to me about the price. Says its on sale but when you add it to your cart its $299
Our Price :
$250.00
Sale Price :
$299.00

Mdub707 07-11-2012 08:44 AM

Did you verify that it is indeed the y-pipe section too?

Curry 07-11-2012 05:14 PM

He reached his hand back there and said he felt the crack and air coming out. I trust him. He did my studs, gaskets, egr delete. But quick question. Is it normal to see some white smoke then black after leaving a stop light?

Mdub707 07-11-2012 05:27 PM

I meant did you verify the setup from MPD includes the y pipe?

No that's not normal

Curry 07-11-2012 05:53 PM

Not yet. It might even be just light black smoke that isn't as thick. Coolant level hasn't changed at all.

Curry 07-14-2012 05:36 AM

Called MPD yesterday they said it is the y pipe. I should have it early next week :c:

Mdub707 07-18-2012 11:45 AM

Awesome. Can you snap some pics of it when you get it? I'd like to see it myself. Thanks!

Curry 07-18-2012 05:24 PM

Will do but they still haven't even started processing my order. Was ordered last Friday. If I don't have it by the end of the week I will be canceling my order and get it from somewhere else or ford for $290.

Mdub707 07-19-2012 07:43 AM

Yeah I know they build a lot of their stuff to order, but it's worth the wait. I've seen some of their TIG welded parts, they do some AWESOME fab work. I know Innovative sells them too, and possibly Elite. Or you can probably order the HD bellows by themselves and bring those and your stock setup to a local fab shop and have them weld them in, but you'd be taking a chance it wont fit right too.

Curry 07-19-2012 10:47 AM

Well i might end up buying fords and repairing the cracked one
I can fab it and weld it myself. Just can't have my truck down for more then a day.

Mdub707 07-19-2012 12:52 PM

Call up MPD and see if they'll sell you just the bellows to weld in, it's all they do really... the Ford up-pipes are ok, it's just their flex section that cracks apart. It can't take the heat.

I really want to get a set of Steed Speed headers, feeding into some 2.25" up pipes mandrel bent feeding into dual volute T4 housing pushing a big charger.... ahhhhh to dream...:humm:

Curry 07-19-2012 04:39 PM

Anythings possible just takes $$.

Curry 07-24-2012 08:03 PM

Well I called them again yesterday. Was told it wold be at my house today ( Tuesday ) by ups. Of course it wasn't here. Calling tomorrow morning and canceling my order. Beyond pissed.
